[General] Voip Dial Plans...Please excuse my noob terminology

I've recently changed voip provider and moved my DID number, but I still have funds left from previous account. I'm using a Linksys PAP2T-NA device. So everything is configured and working with my new provider. Is there any way that I can still use my funds from my previous provider for calling charges?

Thanks for your help.

If you still have funds left at your old provider, then presumably you still have an account !!

Let's say your old provider was Voip.MS or some other type of BYOD provider. In that case, porting away a DID does not close the account....because for example, you still could use those funds to make outbound calls. (It tends to be different with a non-BYOD provider like Vonage where the DID and the account are one entity).

Your ATA has two separate lines, so use one for your new provider and one for your old provider. If your account is still active at your old provider, you should be able to register and make outbound calls.

Or perhaps you could ask them for a refund. Some providers do this.

I thought about that. I'm just stuck at the point that we only have 1 phone in the house (with cordless receivers). If I understand you correctly, I would need another phone, correct?

Yes, after porting the number out, I still have access to my account with the old provider (BOYD). It has less than $10, so I'm not too concerned. I thought there might be a way to use the DID from my new provider with a dial plan from the old provider.

DID only relates to inbound calling; whereas the easy way to use up your funds is with outbound calling.

Do you have a headset for your computer? In that case you can set a free softphone registered to your old provider, and make outbound calls to use up the balance.

Your original goal is easy with some of the other Linksys/SPA devices, but not with the PAP2T.

If your old provider has calling card access, that may be a way to use up your balance, if you can call the access number (via new provider or cell phone) for little or no cost.

Or a PBXes account could be set up for the short term while you use up the remaining balance.
