 | [Internet] Need a Bell modem (just a modem, NOT 2wire gateway) Hey All,
I currently have a very good router, and only want a modem for my bell service. I gave them a call, and they only offer the 2wire.
I had the 2wire, and it died about a year later. I was lucky and my uncle had an older speedstream modem that I now use, and got a good router to go along with it.
Since I work from home, I need reliability, and should the modem die, I'm screwed. So I need to find a good backup modem as well, which Bell doesn't offer anymore.
Is the Speedstream 5200 I can find on Ebay a good buy? Are there any more newer models that will work?
Thanks in advance! |

| Re: [Internet] Need a Bell modem (just a modem, NOT 2wire gatewa As long as you're not on VDSL2 (Fibe 25), any ADSL2+ modem will work. I used a D-Link DSL2320B for three years, it worked well and was DMT-compatible, but any ADSL2+ modem will work. It turns out that if you deactivate all the capabilities of the 2wire except the modem (i.e. turn off wireless, PPPoE etc.) and use your own router, the 2wire makes a pretty decent modem, especially on marginal lines. |

 | reply to Drecca If you just need an adsl modem many can be had on ebay for 2 dollars or less. The adsl modem is all but obsolete. |

The 2Wire modem had a recall on the power adapters going back 2 years or more.
I would get Bell to replace the 2Wire. A router works very nicely behind a 2Wire and there are no indications that the 2Wire modem is unreliable. Bell has been automatically updating the firmware in the 2Wire from version 5 to version 6 and since your modem was not in use wont be up to date.
My recommendation is this: 1. Remove the phone cord on your current modem. 2. Call Bell Internet support and tell them that there are no lights on the 2Wire 3. They will check the circuit with your phone number and not see a modem. 4. They will send you a replacement modem. 5. Make sure you have your b1xxxxxx and password available. Please remember that ALL Bell modems belong to Bell Canada, they are rented to you for a fee. Bell does NOT sell modems. You will need to return your defective 2Wire.
Connecting a router behind a 2Wire was recently discussed here: »Connect my Dlink to 2wire
Power Adapter Issue (see attachment):
If anyone still has a defective adapter, call Bell and get it replaced or get the modem replaced.

 | reply to Drecca The 2wire will automatically be in "bridging" mode when it detects a PPPoE start-up request on a LAN port. You can also turn off the 2wire wireless module before placing your router. |

Hehe, I completely forgot about the recall. Bell never sent me a replacement power supply. That said, I've been using my own ST585 for a few years now. There were just too many problems with the 2Wire with Bell's firmware. |

Bell is constantly "upping" the price so as to "force" these customers to change to a different service. My Fibe 10 plan is cheaper that my former "unlimited" "grandfathered" DSL plan. |

There are huge parts of Bell territory which still have 5 meg/800 as their top profile. Not everyone lives in Montreal or Toronto. Grandfathering has absolutely nothing to do with it. -- Need-based health care not greed-based health care. |
