 | best virtual number I would like to port my home phone to a voip service, but im unable to port my home number to any voip provider. So I would like to port my home phone number to a virtual number service, and forward it to my new voip DID. This way I can keep my existing home phone number. What is the best virtual number service to use? |

 | Unfortunately, the virtual number providers use the same CLECs as VoIP providers -- your only choice may be a remote call forward from your ILEC, or a cellular account.
If you are in North America, please post the first 7 digits of your number, including the area code, e.g. 775-754-2xxx. |

As per Stewart's example:

| reply to ms2oo8 I don't think that you will be able to get a VoIP number (regular or virtual) in your area (your rate centre) because the competitive local carriers just are not there.
However, you probably can port your number to a cellular (mobile) carrier and accomplish the same thing. |

| You live in a tough area.
It might be that the closest VoIP number you could get would be something like Guelph!
But for your hometown neighbors who have Bell Canada, calling to Guelph is still a local call. That's a big local calling area they have there.

So one possibility:
a) Get VoIP service with someone like Voip.MS, get a Guelph number.
b) Gradually explain to your friends/family to call the new number.
c) See if you can port your CURRENT phone number to a cellular (mobile) carrier, then forward those calls to your new VoIP number. That way, you will still receive calls from anybody who still calls the old number. |

 | reply to ms2oo8 ok thanks for the tips
So a cellular carrier can do call forwarding for me, but that's the only way?
We just moved here, where we lived before we could have ported our number, but my internet wasn't good enough, now my internet is good enough, but I can't port my number! |

 | Don't give up so soon.
Contact »www.acrovoice.ca/ . The owner, Trev, participates in this forum and can sometimes do porting magic.
Contact »www.wightman.ca/ . They have a presence in Mount Forest rate center and might offer you a VoIP DID or a remote call forward at a decent price. Also, ask them whether they serve as CLEC for any VoIP providers; if so contact them.
If you can get cellular service with unlimited incoming for reasonable cost, you could use it (via a suitable interface device) with your home phones, yet have a separate VoIP service for lower cost outbound calling. |
