CoreM join:2005-06-29 France | Ebox/Videotron DOCSIS 3.0 Modem Hey guys, just looking at modems and was wondering what the best modem is for their faster speed tiers is. Obviously needs to be DOCSIS 3.0 compliant...
I've got my eyes set on a Cisco DPC3000, do these work with Videotron's service or do they force you to use a specific modem? |

 | I don't believe EBox cares (but you pay $20 more on installation), not sure if you wanted to directly use videotron though |
|
 | reply to CoreM You have to validate with Ebox about which modem is SUPPORTED inside Vidétron network. Only a few (with specific firmwares) are approved by Vidéotron. |

I think the Motorola SB6120 also works, but it's discontinued. |

I also saw that it's on Tek something or other's compatibility list so I'm pretty sure they work just fine on Videotron's cable network. |

| Note that Videotron has a different list of approved modems than Rogers.
Before buying a modem from a 3rd party source better call the ISP and confirm such a modem would be accepted. If buying a used modem, you need to verify that it is not on a black list of stolen modems or modems belonging to an account that has unpaid invoices. (your ISP can do that). |

All cablecos have a short list of approved modems (hardware + firmware revisions) and adding a new modem to the list costs ISPs ~$8000 - assuming the modem passes qualifications, which it might not, in which case the ISP just blew $8000 away.
As said above, eBox charges $20 to make people think twice about attempting to activate a modem of external origins since there is a high probability that Videotron may refuse to activate it due to model, hardware revision, firmware revision, lost, stolen, non-returned, known-bad status, etc. In other words, attempting to save that $20 is not worth it unless you know the modem's history. |
