Micron CEO dies in plane crash

Unknown what effect this may have on the company...

quote:
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A small experimental plane piloted by the chief executive and chairman of Micron Technology Inc. crashed after take-off Friday at the Boise airport, killing the head of the Idaho memory chip maker who survived a similar crash eight years ago.

Steve Appleton, a professional stunt pilot and former motor cross racer, was the only person aboard the plane when witnesses said it steeply banked, stalled and rolled to the ground, according to Zoe Keliher, air safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. It was the aircraft's second take-off attempt for the morning.

That sucks. I always admired Micron - one of the last American chip companies. They don't make everything stateside, of course, but still do more than most.

I wonder what failed on the plane. RIP.

Where are Micron's fabs in the USA?

They do some manufacturing in ID. That is also where their corporate headquarters is.

They also have a plant in VA:

They may have others as well, that's just what I could find. I really liked this quote:
quote:
Micron manufactures in the U.S. partly to protect the intellectual-property rights of its patented technologies.

I also like the fact that their stock symbol is MU. Bonus points to the first person that can say why.

Mu is the name of a hypothetical continent that allegedly existed in one of Earth's oceans, but disappeared at the dawn of human history. It's also the 12th letter of the Greek alphabet, and in Greek numerals it's 40. It could also be a traditional unit of land area in China, or refer to a milli unified atomic mass unit.

I think what your referring to is the Greek symbol MU that signifies "Micro" as in microchip. Additionally, a micron is what is now referred to as a micrometer.

Well I have to give half-credit to Mister_E See Profile and half-credit to sk1939 See Profile.

You're right it's about the lowercase Greek letter mu, but wrong about the reason.

Again, it's not about the prefix micro, but it's because µ is the symbol for the micron, the unit of measure and scale at which semiconductor manufacturing takes place... And of course it's the name of the company.

Actually it is used interchangeably in the Semiconductor industry. So to say that a micron is now referred to as a micrometer is incorrect... (I wrote a short paper yesterday and in quick review I used the word micron 4 times, and the word micrometer.... welll i didn't use it). Oh I do work for a semiconductor manufacturer

I met Steve years ago when he was a Supervisor in the Boise Micron Fab. A nice guy. He was really into to moto-cross then... Talked about it a lot at the lunch we had. (I was a field service engineer then for a plasma etch company). I actually bought his lunch. Before he passed he could have bought my meals for the next 40 years and never missed a dime.

Hmm and on the one of the last... Well there TI, Intel, On, Freescale, and some others... I believe TI is a little bigger than Micron. Oh and I think Micron will do as well one way or the other. Steve was not the core creator there like another Steve we won't mention here.

That is a good presentation. I saw the reticle mask, I've never seen one for memory before.

Man I sure do miss working in that industry.
