[OS X] Cannot reinstall, Strange EFI Boot icon

Click for full size
I wanted to reinstall Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini 2.26 C2D, from the original discs that came with it. I've never used the discs before, this is the first time, as the machine came with Snow Leopard. The discs are stamped Mac mini 10.6.2 so I cannot possibly have gotten them mixed up with something else, as I don't have another Mac that would have come with newer software.

Anyway, so when I hold Option to boot and the disc is inserted, this is what shows up. EFI Boot, instead of the normal OS X install. If I click this, it spins and spins, then shows a folder with a question mark on it, then it proceeds to boot to the hard drive.

The disc does show up on the desktop as a Mac OS X Install DVD. I can select it as a startup disc, but then it doesnt boot into it either upon restart.

Is this disc defective, or is something borked with the mini's hardware?

google tells me this happens if the boot.efi file gets unblessed. Not sure how that could happen on a DVD, though.

what if you boot to the hard drive, insert the disk, and run the installer? What happens if you put the disk into another machine? My best guess is that your logic board is corrupting the data transferred over the DVD interface. But that's not a very educated guess.

It doesnt work, it beachballs, then says something "Logoff timed out". Though the cd mounts, and the window with the "Install OS X" icon shows up...

Oddly enough I found a burned copy retail snow leopard DVD I copied from work, and it allows me to boot fine.

So are the original CD's bad? If I take it to an Apple Store, will they replace them?

Weird, maybe the CDs are bad. What if you put those bad CDs into another mac?

Any scratches on the disc?

If not, could possibly just be a bad press. Were they exposed to a lot of heat or anything like that?

You could try to install rEFIt if you're interested. If that can't boot it (assuming it's the correct disc for the machine), nothing will.

Discs are perfect, I basically just took them out of the package in the box, sat on a shelf for a couple years not exposed to anything.

Anyway the mini has been acting strange so i'll take it to apple store tomorrow and show them this as well.

It's asking where you want to install it. The efi.boot is how the mac boots but don't use it. Install it on the MINI drive.

No it's not. That's the startup option screen when you first turn the computer on, not the installation screen.

"EFI Boot" comes up when the startup disc isn't properly setup. I've seen it a few times, but don't remember how/why.

Took it to the apple store, they ran some diagnostic on it and it needs a new logic board. Thank god for apple care.

I'm going to pat myself on the back for getting it in my first post. Glad you got it sorted.

Hehe, good call on that one for sure. I asked the genius why a retail copy would work and not this one, he didn't really have an answer... But the mini was acting up before this, hence my reason for wanting to reinstall, so i guess they'll fix whatever needs fixing.

Didn't you have a mini get replaced under AC before? Was this the same one?

For some reason I thought you got a newer model as a replacement.

This is the replacement (Late 2009 model)... This is about 2 years after it was replaced. Good thing I bought applecare for it.
