Actually, this VW ad is probbaly of social value as it may incite people to exercise more.

The irony is that cars are probably the single biggest reason for obesity because once people get cars, they stop walking.

The beauty of the dog ad is that it's reminiscent of the days when Volkswagen was famous for their classic ads for the original Beetle, which were done by the inimitable Doyle Dane Bernbach (still around as DDB and still one of the world's premiere ad agencies). It's the same kind of whimsical creativity that looks simple and casual but is hellishly difficult to come up with. It's why the best ad agencies make the big bucks, and there are so few good ones around.
