[hard drive] How long do Green Hard drives last?

I just returned to the store a Seagate ST320005N4A1AS which is a 2T Green Hard Drive after showing me in windows 7 that I had to back up the drive because the drive was going to fail.
I did get store credit. I purchased it almost a year ago. Now this drive was on 24/7 and It had the OS and video files that I stored on it on a separate partition which I streamed on occasion. Are green drives not meant to be used heavily? I been seeing ratings that failure rates are higher on Seagate then they are on WD drive. IN my situation I had the drive working with an Gigabyte ITX motherboard.

They last as long as they last... they fail more often than a say a WD black but you do not have a hard cut off...

That is like saying how long does a human last?

well we last 0 years, 10 years, 20, 30, 100, etc etc...

Same idea...

Some brands have a lower failure rate than others, this you can look up online I do not have the link handy showing RMA rates for a large large European supplier.

You are correct in assuming the "green" HDDs won't last as long. Typically they are constructed with cheaper components. The difference in price, and warranty isn't that significant, considering your time is worth $$.

Buy the WD black! They are better built!

I agree with WD Black's. I've seen close to a zero failure rate with the few hundred I have in the field. Never bought greens but haven't had many problems with the blues.

There really is no answer to your question. Manufacturers don't release their failure rates to the public. All any of us know is by personal experience. However, there probably is a reason the greens have a shorter warranty period than the others but again, that's just speculation. I've seen the data that supposedly comes from a European distributor's experience and their results didn't match up to mine so on the few models I checked so I dunno.

I do know that I replaced 4 or 5 Seagates in the past month and no WD's, and we have very few Seagates in the field, but again, that's just my and my company's experience.

One potential problem is a feature called Intellipark which parks the head after 8 seconds of inactivity. If your system was on all the time but didn't hit the HD every 7.999 seconds or sooner, the drive might have been parking/unparking incessantly, hastening its demise.

There is a DOS utility by WD that can alter this behavior but you're still left with a 5400 RPM drive. Personally, I prefer to just get black editions.

Also, how is airflow in that case? How hot did the drive get? Excess heat could also be a factor.

Good point. We still use Micro-ATX cases for our business customers. I'd love to go to ITX cases/mobos but I've yet to find one that had what I considered adequate cooling. (and looked appropriate for a business office) That said, the greens are supposed to run quite cool, but if the ambient temperature isn't, it's a moot point.

Well the Case I have is this one for and ITX system I build.

I dont think the case has room for a fan I have not looked. The drive was/is mount sideways just inside the right side of the case for easiest access. Right now I have an older spare drive Seagate 500gig and Its not Green.
Actually now I have been reading that WD Black drives are pretty good even though pricey but then again you can put a price for data can you now. I going to wait for a sale anyway before to use my store credit at Microcenter.
I should have known that those Greens are cheap for a reason. Oh well live and learn.

I don't see a place to put a fan either. The mini-ITX cases I've looked at in the past had a fan but they are placed on the side of the chassis that has the vent holes. Unfortunately, for most of my customers the vent holes would be on the floor to provide easier access to the on/off button and the ROM drive button. Had they put the vent/fans on the other side of the chassis, no problem. Of course none of this would cause a problem if the PC is on a desk and not on its side.
