FIOS CableCARD Shipping Fees

I just checked on Verizon's website and they charge $9.99 to ship a Cablecard to my house. Are you kidding me?? They could ship these in a small padded envelope for a 10th of that....

Can anyone confirm this or know how to get one without forking over 10 greenbacks to ship this to me? I was wondering if I track down a FIOS van in the neighborhood, I could get one of a tech for no charge??

Oh yeah, and I already know about the store option which will not work for me as it's too far to drive there.

You could just have a tech come out. You can't just ask someone doing a different job

OK, what would I have to tell customer service that I need a CC installed by a tech? I just want to make sure I'm clear on what CS will ask... why is there a need to dispatch a tech if he/she is not going to install it?

Thanks!

Yeah, just tell them you need a tech to install a CC. Should not be a problem

Ok, ordered the cablecard and it arrived today. I went to activate the card using the self activation and FAILED. Called Tech support and they had no clue. Really, I thought this was suppose to be painless.

Does any tech out there have any suggestions for me to quickly resolve this?

Thanks

did you try activating the card over the automated activation telephone number? I received a replacement STB today and both the auto-activation and online activation failed. I called the number on the activation code sheet and a robo-lady asked me for the activation code and my zip code and that's what finally got the box activated.

Did you get the Host ID, etc.

Yes, I tried the automated phone number as well and failed. That's when I called and spent 25 mins with this rep that had no clue what he was doing. I then tried the whole self-activation again and it still fails..

I was calling the 1-888-897-7499

No, never made it the the Host ID info. It asked for the activation code and zip code then eventually failed both online and phone.

I'm not justifying the $10 cost as being fair, but do remember that the shipping fee isn't just for the actual physical shipping...it's for order processing, packing, etc., in addition to whatever the actual postal/carrier costs are.

Re: FIOS CableCARD Shipping Fees/Activation

Yes, I agree..

However....when they ship the wallet sized card in a box the size of a large pizza box, it not very efficient. Also, this "self" activation should be painless and I'm working on day #2 to get that complete. Time is money, and I spent well over the $10 fee for their poor processes/logistics.

That's what they say, too. 2 hours for a truck roll is way more costly than 30 calls to a tier 1 tech support sitting behind a desk.

Edit to add: I think there's a cablecard support department that handles it directly. If you're able to read them the numbers and enter their reply, and it still fails, ask for a tech, and remind them that not too long ago all cablecards used to be installed with a truck roll.

There have been some problems with authentication. There are plenty of reports of field techs trying multiple cards until one "took".

What device are you trying to get the CC activated with? If the device isn't recognizing the CC, you may have a problem with the host device - not the CC.

Most of the failed CC installs are due to defective TiVo CC slots - we have helped many techs try and activate up to 10 cableCARDs in a single bad TiVo box - TiVo is notorious for sending out boxes with broken CC slots....

The slot breaks when someone tries to force the CC in the wrong way, and then the pins get bent.

Re: FIOS CableCARD Shipping Fees

I tried as well as 3 techs to activate a cable card in a pioneer media receiver after having it replaced twice, and never got it activated.

Actually they are very close. The Call center actually is more expensive.
