Consistently slower speeds starting around January 29, 2011

Hello,

Getting to the point, speed test and usage of my internet connection shows that my DSLExtreme service, from 2006 on an AT&T line, for 1500-3000 kbps down/384-512 kbps up, has gone down from a consistent and satisfactory 2-2.3 Mbps down to a consistent and *unsatisfactory* 1.2-1.4 Mbps down since after a service instability and outage was resolved over the 1/27-1/29 weekend. All I want is to get 2+ Mbps download back; the current 0.42 Mbps upload seems normal and unchanged.

DSLExtreme indicated the outage last weekend affected all users on AT&T lines, and I believe that outage is linked to this issue.

I checked DSLExtreme service prequalification, and my address still shows up for 1500-3000 kbps service (the fastest available on the prequal), and I also confirmed my service has not changed. I haven't changed anything on our end, and I am absolutely sure that speeds were fine before last weekend, and are now much slower for the past week.

So what's up? What was the problem with the outage last weekend (I suspect that's linked to my drop in speed)? Will I be able to get 2+ Mbps speed again, or will I need to look at a different ISP? If the speed will go back up, how long will it take?

Now, I've had the same service for nearly 5 years, and I only remember the 3-4 outages less than 24 hours long as the only problems I've ever had. The few times I've checked, I've been getting about 2.3 Mbps maximum downloads, which has been just fine. The price has gone up a few dollars a month, but I've stuck with DSLExtreme based on reputation and a desire to not get my internet involved with AT&T or Time Warner unless I have to.

I haven't changed anything on my end, and I even checked by plugging directly into the DSL modem. I also did a few power-off resets. Ping and jitter tests are fine, but those speeds are just much consistently lower than what I had before. I tried two different computers and different ethernet cables.

For completeness, I'll try moving the DSL modem to another telephone port, but I don't know where our main box is for our house. But if you can get back to me with some concrete answers, or better, a resolution, I'd very much appreciate your work.

Go ahead and IM me your information and I'll have a tech look into it. I suspect a coincidental physical factor is probably causing interference and reducing your speeds, but would need to see your precise line readings to determine for sure.

Thanks Nick, as you said I got the voicemails on Sunday and Monday, and I was able to verify today that performance is back to normal. That's some quick resolution, through the weekend too!

Glad everything's back to normal. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask. =)
