all others

copys and burns dvds fine playback of downloaded videos are fine including HD videos .So it's not"lack of resources "

I think it maybe copy protection issue.
whole system becomes laggy and unusable
I do understand why people pirate movies now because it can be played back without issue

even copyed dvds (ripped to HDD "VOB" type files.)do the same thing

frames are getting dropped

Is it an OEM disc or a copy of the original.
My knee jerk response would be a faulty DVD rom. Have you tried it on another computer?

I would recommend replacing the drive. Buy from somewhere with a good return policy.

While you're at it, I would also recommend upgrading the RAM to 4GB.

If you have tried four separate drives, with the same result, I would say it is probably a software or system board problem. I'm assuming you have replaced the drive cable, preferably with an 80-conductor version.

Check for a BIOS update for the system board.
Check the BIOS and make sure the drive selection options are all set to Auto for the optical drive.
Check for updated chipset drivers for the system board.

You may need to replace the system board. You can probably find a duplicate model on ebay, or a similar model that supports your CPU and RAM.

It might be time for a new laptop. You could try replacing the system board, but it is a lot of work with no guarantee of success.

You might be able to find an identical model on ebay. If the DVD's play correctly on it, you should be able to just swap the hard drives and be good to go.

Has the system ever worked correctly? Is this a new problem, or one it has always had? Did it come with Windows 7 pre-installed, or was it upgraded from XP or Vista? Does DMA stay enabled for the Hard Drive?

You could be suffering from a lack of driver software, a hardware failure, or a defect in the original system.

What is the brand/model/age of the laptop?

You might check with the manufacturer of the DVD drive to see if there is a firmware update available for that drive. I've seen that resolve a lot of issues in the past.
