2 edits | [TWC] First/second hop problems, extremely slow I have tried connecting my computer directly to the modem, bypassing my router.
I've been having slow downs during peak hours and I understand it will get slow but I'm talking unberably slow to the point that my connection does not even work anymore.
I'm on the Wideband 50/5 plan with a Motorola SB6580 and this happens with me being connected directly to the modem bypassing the router as well as with the router connected.
I notice one thing in particular:
1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.1.0.1 2 66 ms 29 ms 19 ms cpe-98-150-128-1.hawaii.res.rr.com [98.150.128.1 ] 3 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms ge0-4-0-19-oahuhimili-rtr2.hawaii.rr.com [24.25. 231.97] 4 68 ms 69 ms 67 ms cpe-24-25-225-238.hawaii.rr.com [24.25.225.238]

Trace complete.
The second hop which I would like to believe is the first hop from my router to the cabinet along my street or junction box somewhere around my home, right? I seem to have tons of issues with high response times, we're talking 1000+ms to a box that is supposedly pretty close by.
I have someone coming out next week but would love to see what you guys think.
As always, when I called in, the connection looks "perfect" with "no problems to report."
Also is there any specific reason why the 2nd hop which should be close by is experiencing such high latency?
My only other info is that this problem is EXTREMELY consistent during 9:00PM - 11:00PM. |

Hop 2 is a port on a specialized router at your neighborhood hub called a CMTS. No, you shouldn't see latencies beyond perhaps 20 ms, but routers can be configured to have different priorities depending upon the workload, so that the reported latency isn't necessarily accurate.
The five high latencies don't look good. Could be overload, a loose connection, etc. Let them check it out. |

 | Got it, thanks! I'm running Ping Plotter and man my connection is wrecked. |

Have you tried the connection with your PC directly connected to the modem? -- If it's important, back it up... twice. Even 99.999% availability isn't enough sometimes. |

 | I definitely should have said that yes I did try it connected diretly to the modem bypassing my router. |

 | reply to DrDrew Oh hmm, well it looks like I said that in my initial post but I guess you didn't see that. I said: "I'm on the Wideband 50/5 plan with a Motorola SB6580 and this happens with me being connected directly to the modem bypassing the router as well as with the router connected. " |
