[WIN8] Want to use Windows 8 Developer Preview as main OS

Would I want to use the Windows 8 Developer Preview as my main OS and dump Windows 7 Home Premium for good???

Would all my current installed software such as Steams games, CyberLink Blu-ray Disc Suite, and so forth all still work???

Will I have any hardware compatible issues???

No that's a bad idea. It's a beta.

Betas have a timebomb (stop working after a certain date), and for any bugs that arise you won't be able to patch them. You won't be able to update to the final release. The Preview's timebomb has just a bit over a month left now, after that it'll force you to reboot every 2 hours.

It happens all the time, people ask how they can update from a beta to the final release without losing all their data or reinstalling/redoing everything. Usual response being they shouldn't have used it in the first place.

Good advice, but I'd add that it's not even a beta - it's a developer preview. The point of that is to give people a jump-start on working with the APIs. The OS doesn't have to even try to be complete, unlike a beta release.

I just add that the actual Windows 8 beta will presumably be released later this month and should be more feature complete then the earlier preview. Even then its not a good idea to use it on an every day production or mission critical box.

I bet he will ask the same thing again after some time.

Simple answer NO.

longer answer, what they said.

answer #3, you'll regret it.

forth answer, micosoft doesn't want you doing that.

5th answer, only use purchased software or linux as your main OS.

if you're asking the question here, the answer is no. Don't do it.

Hold on there sparky, the preview isn't even an alpha version, so while its good for giving developers a heads up that change is coming, I wouldn't use for my main OS. Hold off a bit there might be something a little more complete coming down the pipe soon. I suspect that Windows 8 is a lot more then what was in the preview

Is this the line to get in to tell him not to do it?

1. No.

2. Probably not. Even when it gets to BETA, and it isn't there yet, there will likely be a number of anomalies to deal with

3. Most likely! Even upon release, you may run into hardware driver issues...often it takes time before hardware drivers are developed/finalized for a new OS...before release? Count on it.

For those who have extra, or secondary boxes, and want to get a jump on what is being developed, fine, if that is your thing, but for a computer that you actually want to count on? Even running a true BETA makes minimal sense.

A lot of folks will not even install a new production OS until it has had a Service Pack release (SP1), as often arcane glitches only manifest themselves after truly large amounts of users install the retail product.

A substantial number of XP users never even installed Vista, leap-frogging it altogether and waiting for Win 7. Way too early to tell what the value of Win 8 is going to be.

If what you have now works well, what is the advantage to replacing it with a not-ready-for-prime-time pre-production OS?

Quite funny,….

Your comment reminds me of that bit in the movie “Airplane” (Calm Down, Get ahold of yourself!):

Yes. Go all the way back around the corner and two blocks down.

And you can only slap him around until Feb 28th after that it will be OK to install it.
