[Line Problem] U-verse + POTS: No Splitter, No NID!!??

I think the tech installed my U-verse data wrong. I don't seem to have a NID and I don't have a VDSL splitter.

I have 2 POTS lines and U-verse "Max Turbo" (24 mbit down 3 mbit up). The 2 pair from the street come directly into the house, without any external box, and terminate at one of these:

What is the right terminology for that?

The orange pair is my "second" POTS line. It is fine.

The blue pair goes to an RJ11 jack, which my 3800HGV-B is plugged into. There IS a POTS signal for my "primary" POTS line on the RJ11, and there IS a DSL signal. There is no splitter, so I can have either POTS or U-verse, but not both.

I called AT&T to complain, and they said they'd mail me a VDSL splitter. I didn't think you could just plug in a splitter with VDSL2.

I have temorarily plugged in an old ADSL splitter so I can get voice and data, but I'm only getting 300 kb upload, and I'm supposed to get 3 Mbps.

2 questions:
1. Will a plug-in VDSL splitter fix my upload speed (better than an ADSL splitter)?
2. What is the right name for the thing that terminates my pair from the street (in the picture above)?
TIA!

The device on the left is a surge protector it provides a path to ground for voltage surges
The device on the right is also surge protector
I see only one wire pair on the left hand surge protector so there is only 1 line there
The way the picture is cropped nothing else can be seen
A dslfilter will work just fine for the uverse

Thanks. I suspected they were surge devices.

When I ordered U-verse data, I attempted to retain my DSL. (My employer will pay for both, so I figured I'd get a router that does fail-over.)

I went round-and-round with the order taker. Eventually, we got a tier-2 on the phone who said you can't put two broadband services on a single NID. Since I don't have a NID, that would be irrelevant!

So the thing on the left is a "carbon based lightning arrestor" and the thing on the right is a "gel filled lightning arrestor"?

There must be some other reason for denying the second dsl
The dsl is delivered on a wire pair and as you know a nid is unnecessary for dsl or voice service

Here's a picture of a "carbon based lightning arrestor"

The device on the right I don't really know what it is, it kinda looks like a part of a line module (below) for a voice/dsl line

They need to come back and place and outside network interface (oni). That's What MSOC does to tech's,and all to see first hand. Thats not up to company code. Shame on them

The reason is that AT&T no longer allows more than one data circuit to be connected to the same residential address. »Edited title: AT&T only taketh away

As you can see from the above link, even customers who already have more than one connection are arbitrarily subject to being disconnected. That arbitrary rule it why I am no longer an AT&T DSL customer. Although I really owe AT&T a big thank you for doing it, my Comcast service is a quantum leap above the service I got from AT&T.

This past week I've tried to reduced their paper bills to me put everything services that I have with them on one bill tell me that I can't do that one wireless bill one data line they want to keep it on two separate bills !

Based on problems I have had in the past with combined billing for Wireless, Internet, and POTS, I can not recommend AT&T combined billing to anyone. About every other month, the POTS accounting department (to whom the combined bill was paid by me), would neglect to pay either the Wireless account or the Internet account (resulting in that particular service being disconnected), and I would then have to contact the billing department for that particular service and make an emergency credit card payment in order to get the respective service restored. After that would come the hassle of attempting to get credit or a refund for the extra payment. I terminated that arrangement as soon as the one year combined billing contract I committed to was up.

You can't depend on AT&T to honor multi-service discounts either. When I first signed up for a "Standalone FastAccess" account, I got a $5.00 per month discount for also being a wireless and CallVantage customer. However, that did not last long, because AT&T changed the service name to "FastAccess DSL Direct", and said that since I no longer had "Standalone FastAccess", I no longer qualified for the discount.

You have there the insides of a NID. If it's indoors and out of the way you should be fine with installing the VDSL splitter. If you really want a NID for some reason call 611 on a POTS line, one not associated with DSL or U-Verse if possible and tell them you have noise on the line when it rains and no test jack.
