Re: Help me choose a model and year used car

I stated 2000-2005 impala for a reason. The new ones are not very good.

I did a quick search on autotrader for pontiac vibe in chicago area as I dont know where you are from.

2007 Pontiac Vibe - 95K miles - $7995
2010 Vibe certified - 26K miles - $17,995
2010 Vibe - 28K miles - $14,998
2010 Vibe - 25K miles - $10,985
2006 Vibe - 97K miles - $9,990
2007 Vibe - 102K miles - $8,495

I would look for a Vibe they will last well over 200K miles.
The 1.8-liter 4cyl engine (corolla engine) for the best gas mileage and reliability.
The AWD and GT models have bigger engines, but you will have to verify if it is a reliable one or not.

Here is an article on the vibe - »www.edmunds.com/pontiac/vibe/

I thought my co workers 2010 impala was a good sized car with good pickup. It was nice.
As for reliability we shall see what happens.

I appreciate the feedback, but the Vibe doesn't match my needs. Compacts are on the “must not” list.

Foreign versus domestic flames are against this forum's rules.

I have my reasons for wanting what I want. If you want a foreign car, I am not denigrating you or your choice. Why do you need to denigrate my choice?

There is not one single car assembled in the US that uses 100% of its parts from US sources. The "Big 3" manufacture most of their vehicles in Mexico and Canada. The Chevy Malibu is the most "american" car that's made by an "american" company.

After the Malibu, the Ford Explorer is up next but being an SUV, you won't go near it, after the Explorer is the Jeep Wrangler - another SUV. Finally, we have the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia....two more SUV's.

By your specifications, you need to look for a Chevrolet Malibu.

From personal experience Avoid the 2006 to 2010 Malibu's. They have a power steering flaw that Chevy will not admit to but you can do a search and see thousands of complaints of the electronic power steering failing while driving. Mine failed on the interstate at 70mph. The repair for the part is $800 for a $9k car.

Re: Help me choose a model and year used car

DON'T, and I mean don't get a Taurus. You will regret it. My family has had 2 (a 97 and an 05), and both have been atrocious on reliability. It will be broken or in the shop more often than not.

I would point you toward the Pontiac G6 or Saturn Aura (same car), or Chevy Malibu for midsize.

For full size, Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, Dodge Charger (probably out of price range), or Impala 2006+

I do all my own work on my cars, and I can't stress enough to avoid the Taurus like the plague. I've never seen a car with such low quality control standards. The 97 was bought new and had to be towed to the dealer five times in under 30k miles. The tires Ford put on it all blew out with less than 20k miles, we finally gave up when the 3rd one blew and replaced the 4th. Ford refused to pay anything.

The 05 had all kinds of problems, ignition system problems, water pump, alternator, fuel pump, power steering rack, wheel bearings, and the entire braking system (excluding the ABS pump) all went bad and had to be replaced before 100k.

The vibe is a wagon. How is that a compact? If you aren't interested, cool, but it's not a compact.

2000-2005's aren't good, they eat transmissions. After 125k, you expect to have to get it rebuilt, if you haven't already.

This is coming from a current 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix owner (me, and GP is essentially the same as the Impala), that the trans is currently out of the car (sitting on the floor waiting to be put back in) for the 2nd time since I bought it.

"Of all the compact cars that wore Pontiac badges, the Vibe was by far the best."

Maybe you're confusing compact with sub-compact?

The Vibe was a rebadged/restyled Toyota Matrix, a compact car, even if it was a hatchback.

I've owned a '93 Taurus for six years and, relatively speaking (it is not exactly my dream car) I like it. Currently has 189,000 miles, I've replaced the following parts: starter (it failed the day I bought it!), distributor cap (two times), air filter, occasional oil changes, radiator, alternator, and the dreaded heater core (I hired that job done).

Given the mileage and condition of my $1200 full purchase price third or fourth hand car, I'd say the reliability was average.

Most automotive sites rate Taurus reliability average or better than average in most categories. That said, sounds like you won the Lemon Lottery two times with yours.

Guess my definition of compact is different. I'm 6'6" and don't fit in most small cars, but fit in a Vibe just fine. I would agree it's definitely a small car, but I have a hard time seeing that fitting in the same category as a Civic, Focus, Cruze, etc.

Based on your criteria you don't leave open any options. It seems to me you've already made your decision.

Just read you're in Louisville, hi neighbour!

If you don't beat it, it lasts a long time. Mine is up to 260k on the original tranny, no problems.
