Got a RCA/VGA connector years ago. Want to windows 7 external to a laptop, but not working at all. I upgraded to windows 7 so I dont have my original drivers. Guess this isnt possible?

What exactly are you trying to do here? Why would an adapter like that need drivers?

The adapter itself came with no drivers. I want to use my tv as a 2nd screen. I have no S-Video/HDMI for this 5 year old laptop.

With composite video you will probably be able to do only 640x480. That may be the issue.

Or perhaps what you need is this instead.

The adapter in your picture needs that the VGA source pass composite video trough its port. Perhaps your laptop doesn't.

im not sure that adapter will work on a modern VGA PC.
vga signals are typically made of 3 colors (RGB), vertical & horizontal synchronization.
this would require 5 connections with the rest left for other non important uses.
for this to work on NTSC, the horizontal frequency has to be at 15.734Khz and the vertical frequency at 29.97 NTSC, there isnt many modern PC's today that can deliver that through the VGA connection, additionally, the RGB and V+H sync signals have to be combined properly as a single signal (composite).
thats a strange adapter indeed and i suspect its used for a different type of device other than for use on a PC.
id be more curious to know which pins are used on that adapter for the connecting plugs.

Dont remember where/why I got this adapter, but thought I would check this forum. Also, trying to use my 720p tv for this idea. That might be an issue too...??

im sure there is a use for it as those connections have to be terminated on some pins of the vga connector.
the question is what pins are being used.

Usually those HD-15 adapters are unique to a specific type of video card that could be set to output in different formats. Likely your laptop's VGA output does not support this unique adapter. You need a scan converter to be able to go from VGA to S-Video or composite video into your TV set, and the resulting image will not look so hot.

That connector you have is used for ati radeon cards that have an option for composite or s-video output using th vga connector.
Or its used for a computer monitor to accept s-video or composite connections through it specially made vga port.

If you dont have the ati or other video card that supports that output on your laptop it will not work.
If you have a nonHD tv then you can buy a VGA to Composite "converter".
If the TV is HD then you can buy an vga to HDMI or a vga to Component "converter" if the tv does not have a vga port.
In either case it will not be just a cable, it will have a box that requires an external power source to convert the signal.

What is the model of your laptop?

I have to look on my model. I might have to see if I can reinstall the video card driver.....(now that you mention that) -Dead sure theres a low budget ATI in there. Also! Thanks!

That HAS to be a specialized adapter...VGA does not have audio. And I seriously doubt that laptop is using an ATI chipset that supports that type of output.

Companies try to save money by using common adapters/cables. And all it does is confuse consumers as they expect all cables/connectors that look the same, to work in any configuration that they can connect them.

If you have USB 2.0 ports on that laptop then this will be what you need. »www.amazon.com/GSI-3-RCA-USB-Cab···&sr=1-16. From the looks of it at best you will get up to 480i

If you look closely at the adapter, there is a female 3.5mm stereo connector where you would plug an audio source (from the computer's own speaker or headphone port) and is presumably wired to the red and white RCA plugs.

As you said, they used a common conector for something different from what users expect. That adapter is intended to be used with a video card that passes composite video through the VGA port. His laptop dossn't. Similar adapters found in Monoprice warn about this that they may not work with modern video cards and laptops because they don't pass composite video.
