| HP DV6 laptop Errors starting happening with the hard drive, blue screens and the like. Since I was going to swap out the monitor cable (it was going bad), I was going to re-install Windows. Got it all back together and working fine. Attempted to re-install Windows using the backup partition; failed. Tried to use the backup discs; failed. Tried to use an OEM Win7 disc; failed after trying to format the drive. After deleting partitions, it couldn't find the hard drive. WTF? So I powered down, popped off the hard drive cover and removed the hard drive. When I flipped it over, part of it was brown. And the part that was brown was the part that is directly over the Wi-Fi card. It even has burn marks from the two wi-fi cables that go up into the lcd screen. So now I'm thinking it's got a bad wi-fi card that over-heats. And there is no heat-shield between the hard drive and wi-fi card. What do you super-techs think?

See the burn? -- "The level of sacrifice that you give is beyond my comprehension. If the rest of us in the Country showed the level sacrifice that you do on a daily basis, we wouldn't have any of the problems we have." Comedian Lewis Black speaking to the US troops. |

1 edit | I didn't know a wifi card could get that hot and burn the HDD.
Since there isn't an OS to view the temps, was the laptop hot to the touch? -- Moe, I need your advice

| reply to Harddrive redxii, it wasn't hot. So I'm not sure how fast the heat dissipated.
psafux, I don't really know at this point. what do you suggest? should I prop the laptop up with the hard drive off to the side somewhat?
pog, nope. warranty was gone about a year ago. -- "The level of sacrifice that you give is beyond my comprehension. | reply to Harddrive »h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-H···p/304505 the 5th post had some what the same problem. Wifi die and then the rest of the system. Seems to be a big problem with amd/ati. Some suggest lower the cpu to 90% instead of 100% |

 | reply to Harddrive That doesn't look like a burn, more like dust buildup.....
That said, the DV6000 series, as well as the 5000, 9000, and Compaq 2000 (think that's the #) all had a bunch of problems, and I'm still seeing them come in here with varying degrees of deadness.
Usually, it starts with the wifi dying, with the card no longer being seen by the system - light on front stays red instead of blue, then usually the media bar quits, the sound quits, or the thing no longer POSTs.
I really like the look of these systems, it's a shame they were so poorly designed. |

Those DV series when the wifi disappears, it's NOT the card that fails, it's the actual port on the motherboard that goes. It's all a heat issue. |

| reply to Harddrive Wifi card replaced. Hard drive replaced. OS installed. Been running fine since last night I've been told. And I did check the old hard drive. The burn marks match up exactly with the wifi card and antenna cables. It's not dust and won't come off. |

| There was a class action lawsuit concerning the HP DV series laptop WiFi (maybe 2 or 3 years ago). They were prone to all sorts of WiFi problems - not connecting and WiFI cards overheating and damaging the MBs.
I have a DV9000 and the MB, fan, and WiFi card were all replaced under warranty about 3 years ago and it is still working fine today. |
|
 | Unfortunately, there was a set time to get your laptop in to be fixed for free. They no longer accept any more laptops as they closed that lawsuit case (even though the issue is still on-going). -- Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Indian. Robert Orben

| reply to Harddrive Is the fan on all the time? They weren't on the dv6000 series of laptops, and they released a BIOS to keep it on at least low which reduced temps significantly.
I have a g6 now, it has an option to keep the fan always on in the BIOS. -- Moe, I need your advice
