USB extension cable - Where to buy?

I bought one of those multi-format media card reader for my PC. However the USB cable that plugs into the motherboard header is too short. So I am looking for a 10pin M - 10pin F extension cable about 12" or so in length to make the connection. Wondering if Fry's or tigerdirect etc would have one of these cables in stock?? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Off the top of my head I don't know the maximum length for USB, but I have a 6-footer I bought from Frys. Aside from length make sure you get the ends you need. Male-Male or Male-Female, USB-A or USB-B, etc.

From what I understand the recommended maximum extension is 3 meters.

Here is a good source on all types of cables.

Yeah but you're MacGyver - you can make this out of twine and chewing gum, right?

Not sure if people realized that, but seems to me he's looking not for a usual USB extension cable but he needs a longer a cable between the 10n pin headers on the mobo and on some reader.

Frys have lots of cables. I'd look for not an extension cable but simply a longer USB header cable in 'motherboard accessories'.

They make special adapters you could put on the end of Cat 5 cables to turn them into USB cables. I'd used well as long as 100' at times in special situations without a problem.

You are correct, I should have said the cable is completely within the case and I need a foot at most.

I'll check fry's and compusa for a premade cable. Otherwise I know I can buy the parts there and build one if needed. Thanks.
