 | Results and statistics of external antenna mount I am planning on trying verizon mobil broadband pretty soon. My new house is in a somewhat rual area. Certainly outside of town. My question is, when I get this, if my signal is low what are the chances of an external antenna improving it? Do people actually get good results from them? I am on a tight budget right now so how much would a good basic kit run? |

| reply to cghbuilder86 Let us back up a bit. Have you gone to the Verizon Wireless website and used the coverage map section to see what kind of coverage and service Verizon thinks they might be able to provide at you location? Would you be willing to share the nearest intersection of two roads, so that those who might help you on this forum can get a better picture of where you are in relation to available towers?
If we see that you can get service from Verizon 3G EVDO Wireless broadband, you might want to consider the services from the company Millenicom at »www.millenicom.com/ They offer a 20GB per month plan for $59.99/month using the Verizon's tower system »www.millenicom.com/page/plans#advanced_plan. They basically buy cellular wireless GBs in bulk and resell them, in smaller packages, to the public at a discount. Contrast this with Verizon's offers.
If you were to use the Millenicom Novatel USB 760 modem you would need an adapter cable similar to this »3gstore.com/product/1040_novatel···ble.html or this »www.wpsantennas.com/359936-anten···dem.aspx and an antenna such as »3gstore.com/product/1773_magneti···760.html and a mounting plate such as this »www.wpsantennas.com/browseproduc···ane.HTML
It might cost up to $90 with shipping to get all 3. There are other online stores that might be less expensive.
I have used this type of set up inside a concrete block office topped by HVAC equipment, inside a metal building to go from 0 bars to approximately 1 bar. |

 | Well, I haven't actually moved in the house yet. I have bought it but there is a couple more weeks until I can move in. So I haven't signed up with an ISP yet and I'm not sure on the nearest road intersection. There is not a tower within sight though. I did check the verizon coverage map and it says that there is estimated to be service there. I was just wondering if I get it and I'm getting like 1-2 bars if I could count on an external antenna to add what 1-2 more bars? $90 is not bad. I could swing that. The main reason I wanted to go with Verizon is a 15 day trial period and I won't need to buy a router. With Millenicon 24 hour test period and I would need a router also. |

 | The external magnetic antennas in my experience will add 1 bar. To get more that, I use large, panel or parabolic antennas. But they typically are much more expensive. |

 | Looks like I could at least count on it working some better with an antenna. Thanks for all the info so far! Do ya'll know if these magnetic antennas can stand up to weather? Like could it be mounted permanently outside and exposed to rain? Or would it need to be kept dry? |

Max SignalPremium join:2008-03-07 Buffalo, NY kudos:1 | The antennas in the posted tests are made for outdoor use and can take a beating . Most of the professional stormchasers in the USA are using them . So that is a very good indication that can take a beating. -- »www.maximumsignal.net/ |
