 | [TWC] Time Warner Wideband 50Mbps Scam Anyone who is considering the Wideband service from Time Warner Cable (especially the 50 Mbps service) should consider the following:
The only modem/gateway they use CANNOT sustain 50Mbps down. This is the Motorola SBG6580. From the day I got this service, the connection degrades over time (1-2 days) the connection degrades over time to 25-35 Mbps. I have had the modem replaced as well as everything on the pole outside.
Tech support has observed this behavior directly and confirms that it's the modem but THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
Modem configured wide open, network cards replaced, reset, nothing helps.
In essence, they are selling you 50 Mbps when they know you'll never be able to maintain that speed.
So unless you like overpaying for your internet service, you may want to consider something else.
I will admit they were very responsive about trying to fix the problem but it's sad that they knowingly can't deliver on the speeds they're selling you. |

| reply to jasper That modem is known to have issues. And BTW not all markets hand out the same modems, down here in my area they hand out the UBEE combo modems for D3 services (yet to be launched).
It would help us if you posted some signal levels and trace routes when your problem is occurring rather than ranting and maybe we as a community can try to help you out. |

| reply to jasper said by jasper:the connection degrades over time to 25-35 Mbps. I have 30/5 and it hasn't degraded for me (you'd think that it'd drop down to 25mbps or below after 24 hours based on your OP). Then again, I'm not currently getting the full upload speed either at the moment (but this may be a problem on TWC's end--waiting for Tier 3 to get back to me). |

Though, if you're trying to do it with wireless, you will probably have problems. Make sure you turn everything off on the modem. If that still doesn't get it, something upstream is wrong and you'll probably have to spend a lot of time chasing TWC to get it fixed. |

 | reply to jasper My 6580 sustains the 50/5 package, but I want more! |

 | reply to jasper I had the same problem when i started my service back in July 2010 with the RR Turbo 20/2. They changed out my modem (SBG6580) twice and replace the fittings at the tap multiple times, but the connection was always giving me disconnects and my signal levels would always vary, never stable as if there was lots of noise in the line. After the last tech came out I showed him the signal levels and finally we came to a conclusion that the line coming from the tap to my home was probably cut or messed. So a supervisor came in and checked everything once more until he made an order for the company to come in and run a whole new line to my house. After 4hrs the crew showed me the old cable and it was all messed up and cut everywhere. After the new line was installed and properly grounded at the block, my connection has been always stable and have constant 20/2 speeds. I just upgraded to the wideband 50/5 and still get constant speed. I haven't had any problems since. If I were you I would call them up and tell them you want a tier 3 supervisor come in to check the levels at the tap and your home. Then once he is there you can talk him into replacing a new line from the pole to the house. My buddy just got a new line replaced also a couple days ago. I would give it a try, don't give up. It might just fix your problem. You should post your signal levels so we can see what u got going on. |

| Don't you just love how the OP has never come back to face the critics?
It sure helps if the OP would search and read some threads before posting. Would be nice if more people did that. |

Probably at$t astroturfers or shills, it is well known that they do exist. A friend of mine that works for at&t was ORDERED to get uverse and promote it in online forums. She told me that some of her coworkers regularly go online to bad mouth the competition (Cox, Charter, TWC etc) |

1 edit | reply to jasper The SBG6580 does handle 50mbps, but bugs in its router functions cause speeds to degrade. Best thing to do is put it in bridge mode and get your own router.
I don't think it's a big conspiracy, but there is definite truth to the OPs post. Mine behaved exactly the same way. TWC needs to push Motorola to fix the bugs. -- AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011 Rethink Billable.

 | Hard to prove, I doubt it's written down anywhere (even AT&T isn't THAT stupid!) but like most things it's verbally communicated. |

| reply to trparky It wasn't any different when i worked for ameritech. I had to promote their 768Kbps dsl product as better than the cable company's 10Mb internet online and anywhere i went. (This was back quite a few years).
That was just as bad as selling msn dialup internet to people buying printers when i for 2 days worked at best buy. | I had to promote their 768Kbps dsl product as better than the cable company's 10Mb internet online and anywhere i went. It's DEDICATED!! Not that shared junk! LOL
PacBell / SBC had the most brilliant "web hog" ads back in the day. I've never seen a misinformation campaign be so effective.
Back to topic - I'm on day 5 of uptime with the SBG6580 in bridge mode. No more speed drop off.
