Need P-660R-D1 firmware upgrade advice?

I just purchased a ZyXEL P-660R-D1 to replace the modem that I am renting from CenturyLink. I discovered that the version that I purchased does not have the same features that the CenturyLink supplied modem has. I was hoping that there would be a firmware upgrade that would add the features available in the CenturyLink rented modem. When I opened the firmware upgrade page of the modem that I purchased, 340ANJ3D0 was shown as the installed version. The firmware shown on the CenturyLink modem's firmware upgrade page is: 3.40(AGE.5)C0. I went to the ZyXEL website and found the following firmware listed for the P-660R-D1:

3.40(AGE.5)C0 5/27/2011
3.40(AGE.4)C0 1/15/2010
340ANJ3D0 6/25/2009
3.40(AGE.3)C0 4/24/2009

Would anyone reading this thread know if any of the listed firmware other than the 340AJN3D0 would be compatible with the P-660R-D1 that I purchased or how I could find out. There is no version information label on the bottom of the modem. I don't want to brick the modem by installing the wrong firmware.

The C0 series are generic firmwares.
The D0 series are speciality (customized) firmwares.

If you have currently (ANJ.3)D0 and the ZyXel download page is listing both ANJ and AGE for this model you can try to flash the AGE and see if it's accepted by the modem.

The newest from these is (AGE.5)C0.

If the update bricks your modem I'd bring it back to ZyXel referencing their official download page and demand exchange or return.

Sugest you take screenshot of the download page first just in case.

I appreciate your prompt response. The information you provided gives me incite into the firmware that was installed in the retail router. I suspect that the firmware for the retail unit is considered specialty firmware and the other firmware is considered generic.

The unit that I purchased came with an installation CD that claimed to provide an installation Genie. Unfortunately the Installation Genie application would not install on my computer, with a Vista operating system. A window pops up that states "An unnamed file could not be accessed" and the installation process stops there. I had a similar problem with an application to administer a homeplug system. It turns out that the application would only run on Windows XP. I did not find a location on the website to download an updated version of the installation Genie. Would you know of a location on the ZyXEL website, to download updated versions of applications that is difficult to find?

The automatic configuration function did not work properly and the only way I was able to make the router function and connect to the internet was to manually copy all of the settings from the CenturyLink provided router to the retail router.

It appears that you have considerable experience with ZyXEL routers and wonder what is the normal procedure to install firmware. I see included with the (AGE.5)CO. update two files, a binary firmware file and a ROM-0 file. I did not see on any support documents if the Binary File should be loaded first and then the ROM-0 file and if the ROM-0 file is loaded through the same update window as the firmware. If you have updated firmware on any of the ZyXEL routers that included a binary and a ROM file what procedure did you use?

There is a support document on the ZyXEL website: Number SD-10115: My DSL Modem does not boot even after I press the Reset button. I wonder if that procedure would allow recovery of the previous firmware if the (AGE.5)CO. bricks the modem? Have you ever used this procedure?

Have you ever downgraded firmware to an earlier version by simply installing the older version. I ask that in case the new firmware causes problems and I want to install the original firmware or are firmware updates only one way, up? I appreciate your assistance.

The .bin file is the firmware. rom0 is just default config (i.e. reset to factory defaults).

You don't need to load rom0. Factory default reset can be achieved by holding down the reset button for about 15 second or via GUI -> Reset menu.

Since you'll be changing firmware types, here's my recommendation

1) Flash the AGE firmware
- if you get error on low memory, reset to defaults first
- if the firmware gets rejected as incompatible there's nothing you can do
2) Reset to defaults
3) Re-configure the router manually (don't load any old saved config)

If the router has serial port then you can (in most cases) recover from failed update by re-flashing via serial cable.

Downgrade can be done normal way through gui or serial cable. You'll need to reset to dafaults after downgrade.

However, it may (likely) happen that once you flash AGE firmware you won't be able to go back to ANJ.
