[Voip.ms] VoIP.ms - Voicemail doesn't recognize INBAND tones

I recently switched to INBAND for DTMF tones as the other parties I was calling would experience 'talk off'. That seemed to fix the problem but a side effect is that VoIP's voice mail system now doesn't seem to recognize any tones sent to it. Anyone have a creative solution to get around this?

Running a PAPT2-NA for my ATA.

Thanks!

Have you changed the settings in your Voip.ms account?

Yep. I have made the change in both the ATA and in my account. I also tried only allowing G.711U in the account settings. It looks like all calls are using that by default anyway.

Note that calls to say TELL ME 800-555-TELL and to my bank recognize the tones just fine.

It can't hurt to try. If it doesn't work I suggest you open a ticket with Voip.ms.

Thanks. I updated my post as I did try forcing only G711U.

I don't use their voice mail all that much as Google Voice is my primary for incoming VM. VoIP's VM only used when my line is in use and someone calls.

If anyone has any other creative ideas, please chime in.

I'll open a ticket with a super low priority if I can't work around this issue.

This sort of thing comes up occasionally. It's because when calling directly into a system via VoIP, such as checking vmail, most of those systems want rfc dtmf. When calling out to the pstn, everything is Inband, but even rfc will be converted (replayed) at the provider's proxy, so when calling out to the pstn, both work. It can be difficult to have to choose Inband and have Vmail checking not working, or rfc and live with the talk-off. Hopefully, Voip.ms will allow customer input and maybe they can update their vmail system to accept both dtmf ways. One other thing I can suggest is if your adapter has the old *99 feature, one thing it does is force dtmf inband, so that you would have to get used to prefixing pstn calls to automated systems or talk-off prone callers/callee with *99.

My workaround for now is that I setup another sub account and use a soft phone to dial into *98 (their voice mail), enter my mailbox and password and at least I can retrieve and clear my messages.

It's a kludge but it works for now. I use it so little that that's probably the smoothest solution. I'll enter a ticket and see where it takes me.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ummm....text?

I have the same setup as you and it works. Is there any chance your phone itself could be causing the problem? Do you have another phone to test with?

I tested with two separate handsets and get the same not working result.

You might see whether it works, if you temporarily connect to the same server as Mango. If so, that would be useful info to include in your ticket.

You might see whether calling in via SIP URI or iNum, easily set up as a speed dial in your PAP2T, works around the trouble.

When you were using RFC2833 DTMF, did you try setting DTMF Tx Mode to Strict? That may eliminate or reduce the talk-off issue.

I just tested every PoP and it worked for me. It doesn't appear to be a geographic issue.

If you have a moment for troubleshooting...set up your sub account to use INBAND and register your PAP2T to that. That's the only difference I can think of between your and my setups.

Like Mango, I have the same setup and have no issue accessing VM or have any other DTMF issues. I'm registered to "newyork.voip.ms" server and had the same results with the Atlanta Server. I also have registration with main and sub-accounts and no issues.

Idiot
OK - It appears that I'm an idiot.

I did not set the sub-accounts to INBAND .... duh. That little 'advanced options' thing...yeah, you need to click and read it!

I've just set them correctly and will try when I get home.

All should be right with the world now. You folks are great. Thank you so much for dealing with me. Just more proof that asking question in these forums are what it's all about.

Edit - Tested and it works. I'll be hiding under a rock for a bit until the shame goes away.
