 | Quick wireless question I have a Motorola SBG901, and it didnt come with an installation disk and I have no idea how to securely set up a wireless connection. I have my computer set up to look for an internet connection, but i dont feel confident in calling cox and setting it up since im not sure if its gonna be an open connection for anyone outside my house to start using.
I thought you have to type in a long code or something. WPA code i think its called.
Question: If I call cox to register it, will they be able to help me securely set it up? |

The instruction manual should have provided basic information such as the IP address to go to using your web browser and default login information so you can access the administration pages and configure your wireless security. |

 | So I should be able to set it up securely prior to calling cox? Basically, can I just plug in the power and have a direct ethernet connection from the modem to the computer and be able to access the modems website to set it up? |

 Random ASCII key example |
Here are my home wireless network security guidelines that you may find of interest...

Personally I use WPA2-Personal (aka WPA2-PSK [AES]) with long 63-character random ASCII keys to protect my home wireless networks. See the screen shot for an example. At a minimum use WPA. DO NOT use WEP...
Remember if your using Windows 7, Vista or XP you can use Windows Connect Now [WCN] to save off the wireless network profile on a flash drive for later use adding a client or recoverying a client. If the client can not use WCN, ie. like a MAC or Linux client for example, the wireless key is in plain text in the \Smrtntky\Wsetting.txt file on the flash drive. Simply copy-n-paste to the client.
