The Verizon coverage map shows a mixture of 4G Extended coverage and old style 3G in that area. You could be in one of the small areas with no 4G. Go to the coverage map, put in an address you are interested in and see what the map shows. Remember the maps are a highly educated estimate of where any particular type of service coverage will be. They are not perfect. I have come to subtract about 0.5 mile from the edges of the service areas due to my experience. Verizon coverage estimates are a little too large based on what I see when using them.

My experience is that Verizon (basic voice, 3G data and 4G data) can be very unpredictable in Ashburn. IMHO is has a lot to do with its proximity to the landing pattern for Dulles Airport and interference from all of the electronic landing aid and radio signals going on in that area.

My office is located less than 2 miles directly North of runway 19L at Dulles, and I have been able to maintain a solid 4G signal with Sprint for nearly 2 years, and now with Verizon for over a month now. Jets are landing or taking off almost every day and the flight path is directly over my location.

I don't believe interference from air traffic is the issue, even with a marginal reception signal. I'm not ruling it out completely, but I would think that if their signals could cause problems with our phones, than our phones/towers could do the same to the aircraft, and I can't imagine that would be ok with the FCC. Also, I'd think there would be a lot more talk about this problem if it were true.
