Four issues with my truck

Yes.. Another thread about my truck..

I drive a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the I6 and Selectrac.

First issue: transmission that so far seems to only slip when the truck is cold, and the slipping is intermittent. On Saturday morning the slipping happened a few times when cold but eventually it stopped. Later on in the day I added the Lucas fluid and drove to Jersey and back. The transmission hummed along perfectly. This morning I start and drive the truck again. It slipped once but otherwise, it's shifting along as it should. From what I googled, it could be low on fluid, which explains why it slipped less today after I added the Lucas fix.

Second issue: this morning I heard a hissing noise when I released the brake pedal. The hissing was loud enough to make me worry even though the brakes worked fine. But the hissing has stopped since.

Third issue: power steering, or lack thereof. I'll turn the steering wheel without issue one moment, the next it feels as though I have no power steering assist at all. Odd thing about it is that the power steering pump doesn't have the whining that's consistent with a power steering pump that's gone south, and when the power steering assist disappears as I'm turning the wheel, I can hear a hissing sound come from inside the engine compartment.

Fourth and hopefully final.. truck failed emissions testing. I'm thinking the catalytic converter is just about clogged. I know the piece of pipe that comes from the engine exhaust to the cat has a hole that previous owner patched up, so that may have something to do with it. The CEL is not on but the gas station attendant who failed my truck for emissions couldn't tell me why. WTF

Wheeew.. I'm taking the truck to my trusty mechanic tomorrow for a diagnosis. I'm thinking the steering issue may have something to do with the brake vacuum leak that I'm having since it's intermittent and when it does happen it sounds like the truck is losing vacuum somewhere. As far as the slipping, I'm hoping that a fluid and filter change will fix that. I mean it drove perfect today after I added the Lucas fix and I let it warm up.

Your thoughts please

My thought is taking it to your trusty mechanic is the best thing to do. He/she will have a much better view of it than any of us here....

Truck is there now. Let's see what he says

Interestingly.. The transmission didn't slip at all this morning on my way to the mechanic. This after being parked overnight without use. I think the tranny issue had to do with a long-overdue fluid change now manifesting itself.

Everything else.... We'll see...

I have found the the 42RE and the 42RFE transmissions (I think they were still in use in 99) are finicky boxes. Also, they still use bands, so it could just need an adjustment. Hopefully, your mechanic doesn't say you need a rebuild.

The brake hissing - That's probably the booster. They sometimes do that, but I would have to hear it.

Power steering - Mine would steer fine, but if you were going left, then hard right (or vice versa), it would be fine in one direction, but it would act like the assist went away. Replaced the steering box and it fixed it.

Emissions - A simple CEL or code can cause a failure I believe. Again, here, you mechanic would know better.

Alright, truck got to spend the night at the shop.

Per mechanic so far.. tranny fluid and filter change and good to go. So I'm guessing the fluid change was overdue.

No issue found with brakes.

Steering issue.. needs a couple things, but basically he attributed the intermittent steering lock issue to some front-end work. I forget what he said, it will be on the receipt when I pick it up tomorrow.

Emissions issue.. computer hasn't been able to tell what the issue is yet. Hopefully tomorrow I'll know. I have 8 days to fix before I start getting parking tickets for it, and if it's the catalytic converter I plan on buying one on ebay then going to a local muffler shop to install.

Emissions, has anyone checked the OBD2 readiness monitors or for a CEL flag in the computer?

In NY, the "emissions" should be a simple, plug car into computer, CEL off OBD2 readiness monitors set = pass

I think a 99 can have up to two not complete and still pass.

I think that the NYC area removed the tail piper sniffers and dynos... but I am not in that area and not 100% sure. The rest of NY is just plug in and go.

So I caused my own emissions test fail...

Mechanic checked the truck with his computer and found it "Inspection Ready". He asked if I had unplugged the battery recently. This question rung a bell; I had unplugged the battery to change the oil on the truck right before taking it in for inspection.

Yes I know.. Stoooooooooopid

The rest of the stuff I'll know about when I pick it up tonight.

This why? :S

And yep you reset the readiness monitors... this is why the old remove battery turn off CEL does not work... readiness monitors reset, car tells computer tests were not run... computer fails it.

Not sure what you mean by readiness monitors.

Any car that I had to reset anything after an oil change was done by a sequence of gas pedal pumps and ignition turns and stuff like that. Never had to unplug battery.

As for CEL and unpluging the batt, it's always worked for me.
Must be a Jeep thing. Guess this might explain why their quality has always been subject.

This trick works in my 98 Honda Civic. Of course the CEL will turn right back on after a couple miles of driving if something like the O2 sensor is still bad.

I disconnected the battery out of habit. I've had a couple of close calls.

So this is the laundry list of shit the truck needed:

• outer & inner tie rods
• left front axle
• tie rod sleeve
• transmission fluid & filter change

$700 out the door

The tie rods were apparently so worn out and almost stuck that it ruined the power steering pump. At a later date it will need to be replaced. I may do the pump myself. I've done it before on a 1996 Grand Cherokee and that was cake.

I'm taking it for inspection today. Hopefully it won't be another $37 wasted.

Who in the world told you that??? Hopefully not your shop. If they did, time for a new shop...

Really? It made sense to me. Before I took the truck to him, the steering wheel would get almost completely stuck intermittently while turning. When it happened, I can hear the power steering pump whining and hissing.

Now the steering wheel doesn't get stuck anymore but the pump still whines intermittently.

Re: Four issues with my truck

The pump can't really kill itself. It has a pressure-relief valve assembly in it that by-passes excess fluid pressure back into the reservoir. Worst-case scenario, if the valve fails, is the belt will slip. Now, it may be that it is simply worn out from normal wear and tear, as it is going on 14 years old. That would be a reasonable statement, that it is worn out. Not that the tie-rod ends caused the failure.

Well not that the tie rods caused it. I meant more like it attributed to the pump's demise aside from wear and tear.

Whatever the case was, at least the wheel seizure issue is gone.

Now it needs a wheel alignment. The truck only drives straight if I turn the wheel slightly to the left. lol

I'm doing the spark plugs and Seafoam through the brake vacuum line today. Woo yay
