Re: Four issues with my truck

How do the tires look? With steering linkage issues it wouldn't be uncommon to have some tire wear that will in turn cause the tire to not track properly, ie; pull. Have they been rotated since the repairs were completed?

Tires look okay. They have about 35% tread left but they look evenly worn. Truck is not pulling.

Hold the phone...

Above you said "The truck only drives straight if I turn the wheel slightly to the left." which I interpreted to mean it had a pull. If you just had the shop replace tie rod ends, they should have also checked and adjusted the front toe, which includes centering the steering wheel, which is apparently the symptom you are experiencing now.

Did they in fact adjust the toe? If so, they need to finish the job and center the wheel.

No idea what the front toe is.

Before the truck would drive straight with the steering wheel perfectly centered. Now it drives straight with the wheel turned slightly to the left.

I take that to mean either the truck needs an alignment or the steering wheel wasn't "re-centered" when the work was finished.

Front toe is short for "toe-in" which is simply a measurement of the centerline of the tire at front and back, and adjusting it to the proper spec.

Replacing the tie rod ends requires that the toe-in be checked and corrected, and part of that operation is re-centering the steering wheel. Toe-in checking and adjustment is also part of a full wheel alignment, but the full job is not necessarily needed in this case with just a tie rod end replacement.

So yes, you need to make sure they actually did check and adjust the toe-in, and they need to center the wheel now. Having the toe-in set properly by itself is OK, but it is sloppy workmanship to not correct the wheel.

LOL.....ya I'm old, and full of old time sayings....

I see

Yeh.. I'll probably bring it back later on. This guy runs a very busy shop. I'd hate to tie up the truck for a whole day just to re-center the steering wheel.

As for CEL and unpluging the batt, it's always worked for me.
Must be a Jeep thing. Guess this might explain why their quality has always been subject.

Unplugging the bat will reset the CEL and will show "NOT READY" if plugged into a reader before it has a chance to go through the cycles. This state will always be a FAIL on an emissions test, but the person doing the test should have seen this was the state it was in.

When he told me the truck failed emissions, he said the computer showed question marks but couldn't say why. He said to use Gumout on the fuel line and come back.

Obviously this was not a knowledgeable guess.

He's worked on my cars for years. He's a very honest mechanic and very fair with pricing. To me this kind of mechanic is hard to come by, and unwise to piss off.

While I agree with you, I wouldn't want someone making guesses because they could not understand why the computer was not ready......

Theres a place on eastchester road that is very reputable and well known by Einstein Hospital give them a try next time with your truck, couldnt hurt.

Also yeah re-centering the wheel is apart of the procedure to fix the car so him not doing it tells me to run far and fast.

The trans issues you are having sound like what my 2004 started too do at 70k I had changed the trans fluid and it helped for about 10k and then really started too slip.

I dumped the Jeep at that point because the repairs were just getting too costly. Good luck I hope yours does not turn out like mine with a mile long list off issues.

This site »wjjeeps.com/ has some really good info if you want too read a bit more.

I had a 96 ZJ that wouldn't go past 2nd gear once. Added some Lucas tranny fix and that issue went away. I passed on that truck to my sister and she ultimately donated it 'cause she couldn't afford the gas. It was given away with original engine and transmission at 160k miles.

Based on that, I have some masochist believe that this WJ will be just as behaved as my ZJ once was.

Thanks for the site

My 94 ate the trans at 100k. Had several odd issues I never could fix but I liked it a lot. My wj was a pile of crap nothing was good on it. I dumped it at 72k it had metal on metal noise coming from the rear pumpkin, burned up the power steering pump 3 times, trans was slipping and yes all the service was done when it should of been.

Sorry to hear that

This one's holding up pretty good so far. Once it warms up outside I will swap the power steering pump but otherwise she's good. The engine now shakes a little less ever since I added Seafoam through the crankcase and the brake booster vacuum line.

I can tell previous owner wasn't very good at timely oil changes. I've only driven the truck for roughly 500 miles since applying Seafoam via crankcase and changing the oil and the oil already looks a little dirty.
