| reply to Noah Vail Perhaps the accidental slip up of not masking the site owner's identity the last time they went belly up after not renewing the domain registration in a timely fashion had something to do with it? »BTJunkie Shutdown in Progress? Why NO, it turns out..
The site owner privately contacted me about deleting my post in that thread that exposed her identity, but even if I had been inclined to delete that information from my post (I was not so inclined because I very much disagree with the decision to allow stealth domain registrations), by the time I was contacted it was to late for me to edit that post. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. Despite avoiding legal attention so far, the site's founder told TorrentFreak that the legal action against file-sharing sites Megaupload and The Pirate Bay played an important role in its closure.

| reply to NetFixer BTjunkie, one of the largest BitTorrent indexes on the Internet, has decided to shut down voluntarily today. A combination of legal actions against fellow file-sharing sites and time-consuming projects have led to the drastic decision that takes out one the main players in the BitTorrent landscape. Founded in June 2005, BTjunkie has been among the top BitTorrent sites for more than half a decade. The site was never involved in any legal action, and to keep it this way the sites operators decided to shut the site down for good today. The following message was posted on the BTjunkie homepage a few minutes ago: This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but weve decided to voluntarily shut down. Weve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but its time to move on. Its been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best! BTjunkies founder said that the legal actions against other file-sharing sites such as MegaUpload and The Pirate Bay played an important role in making the difficult decision. Witnessing all the trouble colleagues got into was cause for a lot of worry and stress, and those will now belong to the past. That said, BTjunkies owner still thinks there might be a future for other BitTorrent sites. I really do hope so, the war is far from over for sure, admin says. While BTjunkie was never targeted directly by copyright holders, the site was reported to the US Trade Representative (USTR) November last year. Both the RIAA and MPAA listed the torrent index as a rogue site that facilitated mass copyright infringement. BTjunkie is also one of the search terms censored by Google because its piracy related, alongside The Pirate Bay, RapidShare, uTorrent and others. Torrent downloads are becoming increasingly popular after recent events and closure of Megaupload and many other filehosts. If you are looking for alternatives, we can recommend NewTorrents.info which offers verified scene torrents or other popular sites like PirateBay, ExtraTorrent, KickassTorrent or Demonoid. |

Yes, the reason for the shut down was obvious. The site owner was afraid of what would happen when the time came to pay for openly promoting and facilitating illegal activities.
The real owner's identity and location having been made public (as it always should have been) because of their own previous domain registration screw up, made false flag domain registration in places like the Bahamas no longer as effective a shield from legal repercussions. Certainly, the site owner could abandon that now known residence, and assume an alias, but dropping the first bread crumb on the trail, gives an investigator a starting place.
Making money by openly facilitating the unauthorized distribution of intellectual property, while proudly proclaiming yourself to be a freedom fighter, probably seemed like a good idea in the beginning (especially if you thought that nobody could find you and make you pay for your criminal activity). However, under the present circumstances, lying low and hoping that nobody actually brings criminal charges to bear before the statute of limitations expires, now probably seems like a better idea.
And FWIW, directly publishing the words of others as if they were your own words, is called plagiarism, and it is just another form of intellectual property theft. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower |

The Non-Preferred Allocation of IP is a theoretical threat to citizens, who are outside of Big Media. Despite BM's ongoing effort, evidence that our lives are meaningfully impacted by the NAIP has yet to materialize.
Conversely, the open purchase of law by BM has an ongoing and tangibly negative impact on the vast majority of us.

So if you don't personally earn income from royalty payments, or from the direct licensing of your intellectual property, then the loss of income to those whose intellectual property has been illegally distributed is not your problem.
