Two issues (Online gaming and cell phone wifi connection)

Having an issue with online gaming. We used to have the 3MB DSL connection and were consistently getting a red/poor connection in games like Call of Duty MW3 on Xbox Live.

I do not have much time to play, kids usually do most of the playing. But over the holiday break I did have time to play and the connection was consistently terrible IMO.

Some friends of ours recently switched to UVerse and raved about it so I looked at their plans and decided on a U200 with 12MB connection package. Raised our monthly bill just a hair but got more desired channels and a, up to 4x, web speed increase.

Anyway, the online gaming aspect has not been as enjoyable as I expected. I know a lot depends on time of day, who is hosting and other factors, but we still often get red and yellow connections and periodically a green connection.

Here are a recent ping test and tracert test to dslreports.com:

Trace complete.

I have the done the Pinhole setting to forward the Xbox ports automatically, but it seems like the problem is continuing.

My other issues is that in the month we have had Uverse, I have had to reset the modem/router in order for our cell phones to connect to the wifi.

It sees the connection, but will not connect unless we restart the modem.

Any suggestions on either issue?

Thank you!

almost sounds like a bum gateway to me... try a factory reset on the gateway itself to see if that helps any with the wireless... if not I would ask for a replacement on this alone.

as for the Xbox, for kicks and giggles, put it in the DMZ and see what happens. (shouldn't have to, but lets try it anyway)

To be honest I don't use the gateway's wireless myself... I have two access points on the top and basement level of my house, however my parent's wireless through the gateway works fine with their iPhones and iPad.

My Xbox works fine through the gateway even with no pinholes set up.

As for the suggestions above, i'm pretty much giving you ammo for when you call in, to say you've already tried this that and the other.

Install Uverse Realtime and see what your connection looks like. A bunch of ping times doesn't show what is going on.

Here are a couple of screenshots I usually see requested, and I will try the other suggestions as soon as I can.

Thank you so far for the help!

You have a line problem that will need to be addressed for your internet to be gaming capable. You are on the very edge of what is considered an acceptable loop length for consistent service. You will need a line tech to iron out all the imperfections in your line so that your max rate and nose margin go up, or be reinstalled with a pair bonded iNid setup, or you need to be set down to the 19meg service profile. Call tech support and tell them all your TVs pixilated intermittently and your internet can't sustain a solid connection. Assist them the trouble shooting they ask of ya, take whatever first solution they offer, then follow the instructions on the sticky post here on how to contact tier 2 tech support.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will call and try as soon as time allows.

Also, when you say "set down to the 19meg service profile", I am supposed to be on a 12meg profile. Unless I misunderstood what you were saying.

I'm not sure what the other poster is smokin & the understanding of how gameplay relates to the line issue is strange, but there is nothing that indicates to me on your stats post other than the spike at the 1.0+mhz, which is not abnormal at all, it's evidence of AM crosstalk. I have the same spec for that here, there is an AM radio station right up the road from me, backfeeds on lines out here all the time. Your profile is 25M provisioned w/a max sync of 33M, you are getting your the bandwidth spec to the RG connection. Max sync reading on 2400ft should read in upper 30's normaly, but it's not indicating an issue.

Your SNR (noise margin) is showing 11, still over the db cutoff per AT&T specs, red yes, could be caused by something inside or outside. How about your install, connections to the RG ? Xbox, wireless or wired ? Wired is always better if you can. Lag is related to latency and is not always something you can directly control.

PSN & XBL work fine here & I'm on 12M also, using my own router for my LAN, no HPNA garbage. Uverse is also on an Interleave signaling protocol which will add some latency, but I've not noticed any issue reg that on our gameplay.

Wouldn't hurt to have a line tech check things out, but I would start from the NID inside, just to cover yourself. There are many posts in here reg the RG wifi issues, most peeps including myself run wifi off of an independent router, something you may wanna look into.

The op has no overhead (94% of bits in use) built into his profile and the noise margin isn't sufficient enough to be able to cope with normal noise fluctuation that naturally occurs over normal daily operation. For Web browsing or iptv streams, he might be ok, but for online gaming, resent or dropped packets (very common on a line that is almost under allocated) make for a wholly unpayable experience.
