Cuzina join:2007-12-13 Elk Grove, CA 1 edit | [XP] Can I get away with a switch for this? I have a PS3 connected to my wired network in my entertainment center. Recently I have upgraded a few things that need access to the internet. I was wondering If I could use a switch to share the internet connection between my PS3, TV, and Satellite Receiver.
Hookup is like this.
Internet >> Wireless AP (D-Link DI-624 Port X) >> Switch >> then use 3 ports to 1. PS3 2. TV 3. Sat Box with Sling 4. Future 5. Future
Would this work? If so any features on the switch that I need to be aware of.
Usage on the PS3 includes online gaming and streaming video from within my network. Usage on Satellite Box would be to streaming to PC, other devices
Would I run into trouble with online gaming, NAT3, etc?
Could I use the internet in all 5 ports at the same time? Thanks in advance! |

 | reply to Cuzina you could use a hub instead which would save you a few pounds, a switch is only needed when you have several things sending and receiving lots of information at the same time. as you're unlikely to be using all three boxes at the same time a hub would be fine. |

a switch has more modern functions a hub doesn't besides, hubs are almost nowhere to be found while switches are abundant. |

 Multiple switches |
Here's an example of multiple switches on a single network. |

 | What app created that picture? I'd love to be able to document my network like that! |

| Cool site! Their marketing is a bit deceptive though. "Sign up for a free pro account" takes you to a page where you only get 30 days for free, then have to pay every month... It would be great to have a local app that did that kind of thing without breaking the bank! |

Cuzina join:2007-12-13 Elk Grove, CA | Thanks for the replies. So I see a difference of about 15 bucks from the cheapest 5 port switch to the next one. Only differences are frame buffer size and allocation table size. Do these features matter for my usage model? |
|
 | no...not right now though...but in the future where you'll have more devices connected that may need more bandwidth priority, then you'll think of getting a bigger or better switch...
I have an 8 port gig dlink switch that's been working for 5 years now and hasn't skipped a beat, that with more devices than what you have. |
|
 | reply to Cuzina a switch will work, i would purchase a gigabit switch to be used at a later time when more devices are gigabit ready.
and do not buy a hub. even if you were able to easily find one, i would avoid it.
you should be able to use all devices at the same time, but you will slow down your internet browsing with more devices online, that is just common sense. |

 | reply to Cuzina Second asjamias' comment, for a typical user, frame buffer size and and MAC table size doesn't matter. You'd definately want to get one with expansion in mind, 8+ ports or more if you can.
Also second everyone's comments about a) don't get a hub, and b) likelihood of getting a true hub these days is slim to none.
