I'm old enough to remember the Queen's ascension

On February 6 1952 my sister came home during the school day to say they got let out because George VI had died. Elizabeth became Queen on that day. The official Coronation took place June 2 1953. I was in grade 1 in June 1953 and every school child in the Commonwealth was given a commemorative coin about the size of a looney.

Anyone else here old enough to remember these events?

Before my time.
But I think I have a copy of that medallion somewhere, I recall it was copper coloured, had her profile on one side and big letters ER II on the reverse.

Close, but not quite. My parents told me of the coronation, however, and how that was where they watched a TV for the first time.

I do. I remember hearing the news of the death on my way to school. Watched the Coronation on TV.

Not that old, but old enough to have seen here on my coins when she was still cute. But hey everyone gets old.

I don't understand the need to beat her up with her age insisting on the coins looking like a recent photo though.

So you're retiring this year? Lucky bastard...

Amazing the Queen has gone on for this long, also that Phillip is still around too...

I retired April 19 2006 at 60 after 30 years at Statscan. Prior to that I was a FORTRAN programmer specializing in statistical analysis for profs churning through their grant money.

I never saw the Coronation on TV because we didn't have one until 1956. I'm pretty sure we were the last family in Victoria to get one.

I was 12 yrs. old at the time and I still have the Coronation coin on my bedroom dresser. Like the previous poster mentioned, I never saw a tv until about 3 yrs. after the Coronation.

Support for the monarchy increasing in Quebec

From reading recent news reports, one would think that the anti-monarchy sentiment is on the rise in Quebec.

On Tuesday, PostMedia News reported six Quebec MPs turned down Jubilee medals handed out by the Canadian government in protest of the $7.5 million Ottawa intends to spend on monarchy celebrations.

A bit too early for me. I was born in 57 so the only parallel I can draw would be Kennedy's assassination in 63. I should have been in grade 1 but because of my birth month had to wait until I was 7yo to start school.

Eww... FORTRAN... Bad memories from my undergrad years... 1977... ~450 engineering students massed in an auditorium listening to a Vietnamese professor we could barely understand. Cards... Keypunches... Having to book time on the machines...

I'm francophone and I joined the Monarchist League of Canada earlier today. Been wanting to do that for years.

Eww is right. I made good money between '72 and '76 but mainframe programming in those days was an extremely stressfull occupation. You had to learn JCL (Job Control Language) for the IBM at U of O and something else for the XEROX mainframe at Carleton. My worst memory was dropping a box of 2000 punch cards and spending a long day reordering and repairing them. I once made $1000 working 36 hours straight crunching a huge dataset for a prof who was desparate to hand in a progress paper as a requirement for his grant. When I got hired by Statscan in '76 other people did programming for me and I could concentrate on analysis which was a snap compared to programming.

Speaking of the Queen I met her in the Bengal Room of the Empress Hotel in Victoria during her 1957 visit to Canada. The informal occasion was tea and scones for mothers and their elementary school children. It was a highly impressive afternoon what with the uniformed Gurka waiters with their beards and turbans. She was dressed casually as opposed to regally. We school children were given a crash course on protocol and some of the kids were so stressed I thought they were going to pee their pants but all went well.
