Re: Dealer can't fix anything on the first try! Thanks for the clarification.
Is the system on your truck an original equipment system, or one the dealer installed?
Your second post in this thread very much makes it sound like an aftermarket system is present. -- The talented hawk speaks French. |

Your second post in this thread very much makes it sound like an aftermarket system is present. I believe all the front and rear parking sensors are dealer installed options. None come from the factory that way. - at least on the Tundra. |

1 edit | The link provided is a Toyota site is a listing of all available options including icons or symbols indicating the status for vehicles. According to the list, front and rear parking assist sonar is Not Available from Toyota.
Perhaps it was something you requested and someone was confident they could make it work. I have been involved in these situations before and sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Unfortunately, if you asked to have an option installed that Toyota either doesn't recommend or does not make available for that model, you take the chance that it will not work. For whatever reason, Toyota didn't offer the option - so now your only hope is to have the non-compatible accessory removed and get the refund offered.
**See, the devil is always in the details. Based on the initial presentation of the situation, it seems that there is a problem with a factory option that the dealer cannot fix. That isn't exactly the case, since the parking assist shouldn't be on the vehicle in the first place. The oil change issue is a different situation, but there haven't been multiple visits for an oil leak.
Now what I'd really like to know is what the conversation was regarding the installation of the park assist system. I'd also like to hear the dealer's side of the story, but I doubt that will be possible.
Sometimes the desire to provide for the customer over-weighs good sense or practicality. The Zone Representative would likely tell you that you don't have an issue that Toyota can help with; it seems your only recovery is with the dealer. -- "from a broken heart to a hole in the sky" |

| Maybe you didn't look at the link I provided so here is a screen shot. This lists the options for the 2012 Toyota Tundra and I think that means front and rear parking parking assist sonar is available as an option from Toyota.

FWIW, the link posted doesn't show a vehicle with parking sonar for me. It seems to default back to a vehicle that does not have parking sonar as an option.
I can get the option mark if I manually select a different Tundra. -- The talented hawk speaks French. |

I'd also like to hear the dealer's side of the story, but I doubt that will be possible. The front and rear sonar were listed on the original order along with several other options - cold weather package, step bars, deck rail system, power horizontal sliding rear window, towing package, SR5 package, etc.
I asked for a copy of the wiring diagrams and installation instructions. There was no wiring diagram as such just pictures and a narrative description of the installation. However, the instruction manual has "Sequoia" listed at the top of each page. I questioned the service adviser and service mgr about this and was told the installation on both Sequoia and Tundra were identical. I have my doubts and think there may some differences that are causing the problems. |

I can get the option mark if I manually select a different Tundra. The option is available on all Tundras with a 5.7L V8. It is not available on the 6 cyl or the 4.6L V8. Choose the different models and you will see the difference. I have the 5.7L V8 and the front and rear parking sensors are available as an option. |

It took me many tries to find it and it appears restricted to various 4x2 models. So, it DOES APPEAR that Toyota offers a factory-approved (but likely dealer-installed) system.
The question is why is it marked as "-" and at least not "Optional" for different models ? Are the 4x4 models substantially taller and that could be an issue ? I don't think those things are able to be "aimed" and on a 4x4, they may not see low enough. |

| All trucks with a 5.7L V8 (EXCEPT THE LIMITED) have the option for front and rear sonar parking sensors. Trucks that do not have a 5.7L V8 do not have the option. This goes for both 4X2 and 4X4s. If the truck has a 5.7L V8 and is not a limited the option is there.
I have no idea why Toyota decided to make them an option on some, but not others. |

| I see three models that have an option for park sensors: the 4X2 Tundra 5.7L; the 4X4 Tundra 5.7L and the 4X4 5.7L Flex Fuel Vehicle.
Since your truck is not a 2012, I don't know what the availability is. Why don't you provide a link for the 2010 model year and what the availability is for those? It doesn't necessarily follow that systems are the same two models years apart. I know the water and oil pumps for a 1994 Range Rover are not the same as would be installed on 1995, among other differences. They may only be six months apart.
It is possible for the electrics to be quite different one or two years apart. -- "from a broken heart to a hole in the sky" |

I believe Toyota will be like the other manufacturers in that any dealer-installed factory-approved option is covered under the full terms of the warranty.
So, that's a good thing. I still feel you may get some progress if you ask about escalating the case. |

I think I have a plan I made up a log sheet to note the problem and the date it occurred. I have the log on a clip board in the truck and I'll keep records for about two weeks then go to the dealer and ask that the issue be escalated.
That will help document the problems for me and the dealer. What ya' think?

| You may also want to document previous dates of problems and service as indications of continuing unresolved problems with a safety and/or accident-prevention related function. I wouldn't get mad, just get more insistent on escalation and resolution. |

| I'm really not mad at them at all because I think they have made a good honest effort to correct the problems. It just seems to be an issue that requires more instrument/electrical knowledge than they have in-house.
I don't expect to have any problem getting the escalation. They hate seeing me come in as much as I hate going there. When I first drive in I can read the service advisers lips saying "here he is again". |

HallPremium,MVM join:2000-04-28 Dayton, OH kudos:1 | At what point does Toyota (corporate) ask "why are we paying for so much work related to this?" ?
More importantly, why doesn't the dealership come to the realization that you've come to, that is, it "requires more instrument/electrical knowledge than they have in-house" ?
There's (3) Toyota dealers in less than (15) miles from Mobile and (2) more if you were willing to travel farther. Surely one of them is qualified to resolve this once and for all. |

| reply to stev32k I dunno man, the second they didn't change my oil filter during an oil change I would have never gone back; let alone LOOSEN it and not replace it.
That's on the line of not torquing the lug nuts back on when changing a tire. I would question any and all abilities of the dealership if they can't even perform a proper oil change.
I understand mistakes are made, but if that filter was loose and they did their check it would have sprayed oil everywhere. They're up to something. |
