 | Question regarding random shutdowns Hey there, I briefly have posted about this before. I have even spoken to a good friend of mine who does PC work for a living. The problem I am having is my new rig The Video card is an ATI Radeon HD 6870 and Im running Windows 7 64bit (which has pretty good specs, ill post some CPUz pics) is I can run Skyrim, COD, SWTOR, basically any new game on ultra high settings with no lag, artifactings or any problems. But on occasion a youtube video, Yahoo news video, or any type of streaming of video will turn my screen to black with grey lines and the audio of whatever is playing will make a loud "Errrrrrrk" type sound and I have to manually restart the computer. This can happen multiple times a day or I can go days without. I was told hardware wouldnt be the issue or I would be experiecing other problems. Also that software could be a factor, however everything is fully up to date (except the MB I think, as Im not sure to how to update that) But any help or incite would be great. The problem is life threating but becomming progressively annoying. Thanks a bunch for any and all help. |

pogPremium join:2004-06-03 Kihei, HI | what browsers have you tried? if you only use Internet Explorer, try running Firefox or Chrome.
since you are able to game, I expect there's nothing wrong with the card. -- My Site |

 | reply to aryarborough Do you have Catalyst Control Center installed?
Go to video, AMD Video Converter, and un-check "Enable acceleration" and see would that help. |
|
 | reply to aryarborough Ok, I turned that setting off in the Control Center. I am using IE9, I will try a different browser aswell and see how it plays out. Thanks for the advice. |

IOW, see if turning off acceleration helps by itself. If not, turn it back on and try the other browsers. Also, I was just reminded of a problem I encountered last year or the year before with Flash videos causing BSOD (on XP). It coincided with Adobe adding H.264 hardware acceleration to Flash and ultimately was fixed in a later release of Flash. -- My Site |
|
 | reply to aryarborough Okay, ill try it one by one and see what happens. as per the Flash I have the latest version. So i dont think that could be a factor. What do you guys think spec wise based on my CpuZ pics? I am no guru, but I dont think my rig is too shabby? |

WutanGPremium join:2001-12-12 Seaford, DE | reply to aryarborough I've had that happen long time ago under different circumstances. My machine would lock up and go errrrkkk, but would be followed be a BSoD. My suggestions would be to try and start looking for the stop codes or the event manager to try and to get some insight there.
My opinion would be the Catalyst software, but cut to the chase I'd say. Make sure you have error reporting on and set to not automatically reboot after a bsod so you can pull that code.

 | reply to aryarborough Well it doesnt actually auto reboot. I have to manually reboot via the power button as the screen goes black and sound "eeeergs" out and its useless. But then works perfect usually after a reboot, only a few times have a rebooted and encountered the exact same issue. But hopefully some of these idea will work out. Much appreciated! |

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | reply to aryarborough When ya reboot do you have a crash error that pops up? Can we get the info from that |
|
 | reply to aryarborough No crash error, Windows just gives me the option to start in safe mode or start normally. I tried the Control Center tip, to no avail as the same problem occured just today. Which browswer should I try? I have heard Chrome is brilliant, or is there any other methods I should try to determine this problem? |

1 edit | reply to aryarborough Adobe Flash up to date? 11.1.102.55 »get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?no_redirect There is Beta, 12.1 beta 5: »labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashpl···1-2.html
On the lower right, right click on the speaker/volume icon, and select "playback devices", go to "playback" tab, double click on "speakers", then go to "Advanced" tab, is that on 44100 Hz? if you don't, set it to 44100 Hz and then hit ok, and ok again. and see would that help.
I vote for a bios update.. man... looking at that log. This mainboard have a lot of problems. You using bios 0405 (2006.07.31). Since then there is 19 more bios update. Up to Beta Version 1238 (2009.02.11). Total of 21 bios, you on the 2nd last one. LOL »usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_···download
And do you want your cpu to be on 1.5Ghz speedstep mode??.. Just wondering.. That is a 2.9Ghz chip. Up to you on this one. Should be set on 11x266 with speedstep off in the bios »ark.intel.com/products/27258/Int···MHz-FSB) |

 | reply to aryarborough installed adobe beta, checked speakers they are set on 44100 hz (16 bit) working on the bios update now, do I need to download each update or just the latest? and I am unsure how to alter the CPU, if you could walk me through it, I would definately want the added speed. Much obliged for the help. |

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | Read what the bios update says (I checked fast). 99.9% of the time you can just update to the latest but this is a BIOS update, you do not want to mess this up so make sure to read and say if it needs a previous bios installed before hand. You may also need software installed to update. I do not know how they do the update so just make sure you have the latest stuff installed to do the bios update... be sure you do it when you are LEAST likely to lose power.
I have no idea why you would turn off speedstep, I would ignore that. It is power savings for when the PC is idle... about the ONLY reason to turn it off is instability at lower clocks when overclocking... nothing more. Well... or if you feel the power company needs more money from you and you want more heat coming from your pc.
O also I would hardly call bios updates a show of problems... most are CPU compatibility updates... I fail to see how updating the board to support a new cpu is a sign of an issue.
Fine tune voltage? Etc etc... only a few show REAL issues... like the last one fixing a system hang... |

 | Can someone please review the above listed link, for the BIOs updates and confirm for me how to do this. I have never updated my BIOs (obviously) I appreciate all the advice and help. |

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | I think you will need AsusUpdate. Download it and see what she says... I have not used it before but it may make the updating VERY VERY easy. |
|
 | reply to aryarborough Thanks a bunch! Trying it out now. Much appreciated. |

4 edits | reply to aryarborough There are couple of ways to update your bios.
»usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_···download Click on "BIOS-Utilities" and on the 3rd one down download "ASUS Update V7.10.05 Install Program for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista & Windows 64bit XP/2003/Vista." click on Global to download. and then watch this:
Scared? good. there is another way:
»usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_···download The newest bios have all the updates in it. 1.Click on "Bios" and download Beta Version 1238. 2. unzip the file, and save it on to a USB flash drive.
I use EZ Flash 2 and method 2.
So, 1. download bios 2. unzip it, and 3. save it to the zip drive. 4. go to your bios by hitting delete 5. go to tools tab, and enter EZ Flash 2 and hit ok 6. find the bios file select it "P5B-ASUS-Deluxe-1238.ROM" and hit enter and then hit yes 7. Once it is done it will reboot. 8. hit F1 and go to system information and check is it 1238 bios. 9. go to the exit tab and save and exit.
Should you be scared... no... quote: CrashFree BIOS 3 Simply restore corrupted BIOS data from USB flash disk The ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 allows users to restore corrupted BIOS data from a USB flash disk containing the BIOS file. This utility saves users the cost and hassle of buying a replacement BIOS chip.

having fun yet aryarborough?? Nothing to be scared about. Be a man. =D
You might need to re-config some of the stuff.. like SATA - AHCI instead of IDE. If it does reset everything. |

 | I am going to attempt this. Is the likelyhood of any problems a major concern? Or is the update something I should definately do as I keep everything else on my up to date. I just want to develop hardware issues or anything or risk messing anything up. So what do you guys think? |
