| +1 !! There are some very thought-provoking quotes in there, for all citizens, in every land where stuff like this goes on: quote: ... And the reason you need to be worried even if youre not a bad guy, continued Vonn, is because thats not the criteria anymore. The criteria is whether or not youre a risk...And what constitutes being a risk is something thats a formula, an algorithm, a series of data points...You are a risk when you fly if any of the following gets checked off...Its a kind of intelligence-generated slander...a prejudice generating machine...And your ability to defend yourself against surmise is extremely difficult. ... Parsons added that police themselves have traditionally limited and prioritized their investigations, because they simply couldnt afford to conduct unlimited investigations on everyone. Cheap, modern surveillance technologies remove that limitation.
The more you add efficient surveillance mechanisms, said Parsons, the easier it is to start hammering at those underlying assumptions, those underlying frictions that guarantee our freedoms.
And its nearly impossible for the public to hold police to account. Any agency can avoid releasing information for years. ...

The other thread has OUTSTANDING information links on this issue. Bone chilling to read. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE ORIGINAL THREAD AND THE LINKS IN THEIR ENTIRETY. The other thread has OUTSTANDING information links on this issue. Bone chilling to read. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE ORIGINAL THREAD AND THE LINKS IN THEIR ENTIRETY. Long read but well worth the time. While I recognize the other thread (by Noah Vail ) which you reference was begun earlier and has "standing" on that basis, I'm somewhat at a loss about your final comments about its links. First, it only has one link within it that I am seeing (to the focusonline source); and second, how can its link be "OUTSTANDING" (compared with the link(s) in this thread?) if it is essentially the same link? As a point of information, am I missing something you're seeing with regard to that other thread? -- "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? I'd much rather have dupe posts than none. I especially don't want to miss out on good info because forum etiquette makes it unpleasant to post.
Lately; I've seen a number of stories here, that I (and others) likely knew about before the OP. But: • I don't always have time to properly present them or • I (wrongly) assumed no one would be interested and maybe • Their presentation was better than mine would have been, anyway.
From what I can see, AVD 's post grabbed more eyeballs right off; than my version did. Mine may have had more detail, but if fewer people were reading mine because my subject wasn't well formed - how good was it really?
I really do appreciate any praise. We would be considerate to insure it doesn't minimize someone else's effort, though. -- Adopting other people's animosity is The New Stupid. |

| I believe the key thing is always to communicate so as to keep abreast of what's happening with this sort of thing, even at risk of duplicated threads... especially if the threads contain up-to-date links. While the consolidation of such ALPR data may currently be a concern mainly in the UK and Canada, adoption of the underlying technology and equipment continues to grow in the US. (eg: a 27 Dec 2011 article: Jones Co. Sheriff's Dept. Track Drivers with Mobile Plate Reader) IMO, it will be only a matter of time (and unfolding crises of whatever form) until the Federal powers-that-be attempt to consolidate all this plate ID/tracking data here in the US. -- "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? | said by AVD:did you read that Canada was going to share this info with US DHS. I'd not be surprised, although all that I've read myself has indicated this was a "future" concern to privacy of Canadian citizens (the passing of such data through to a foreign, sovereign power without the citizens' permission). If this becomes reality, one can only wonder what the data quid-pro-quo from the US to Canada might be. But then, some folks might argue we're all the United States of North America anyhow... but not me! -- "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?
