You can keep it connected inside the UPS. Make sure to charge it occasionally, because just sitting -- without a charge -- can kill the battery too. Most batteries are ok for 4+ years.
Look for other devices that use the battery backup! My wireless access point is in my garage, and it just so happens that it takes the exact output of the Belken UPS
Other devices I know work fine on them: regular & wireless Uverse STB's and the Netgear GS108 switches.
reply to nine9s2 The battery in use should last 3 to 5 years. The battery self discharges when not in use (the UPS maintains the charge) and left sitting depleted it will shorten it's lifetime, if you plan to use it in the future and don't want to replace the battery, plug it in every 2 or 3 months for a day or two.
On the UPS discussion is it a bad idea to plug in the Belkin to another UPS? Right now I have it plugged in to an APC SUA1500RM2U. -- PRescott7-2097

Anytime I run into this situation I plug the second UPS into the "surge only" port of the first UPS. On a quick search it looks like 50% say yes, and 50% say no; and none listed any technical reasons to prove their answer.
