Question Regarding Disability

Can someone go on both Federal and Provincial Disability at the same time?

Here in Ontario I have a friend who collects CPP disability and ODSP pays him a small supplement because his CPP is so low. The real advantage to him being on ODSP though is that it also pays for his prescriptions which are several thousand per year.

From what I've seen the CPP is easy to get but the ODSP requires at least three months on welfare and a tighter eligibility requirement. Sorry to hear your family is now on welfare.

Nope. Not true. You can go straight to ODSP, although there is a 90 day time frame in getting the medical approval. And no, no one here is on welfare (OW). ODSP is, however, a VERY complex matrix.

Even if they were on OW waiting for the change,OW would take it all back from the first payments they get from disability

I wish.

I have seen them refuse people soooooooo obviously disabled it was dreadful they would even spend a second pondering the matter.

My late ie he passed away, brother in law (married to wife's sister) had a heart in such worthless condition he was told to do nothing, absolutely nothing, no work whatsoever. They even moved north to be in a very quiet peaceful location. It was clear he was more or less going there to die sooner than later.

I think he lasted about 2 years. He was not old.

They gave him grief about getting ODSP coverage.

Standard rule of thumb with ODSP is they defacto refuse you the first time. It saves them money for the undedicated go away.

I was refused 5 times before I got accepted, and interestingly, it was welfare that made me just keep on asking. ODSP just doesn't like signing anyone on.

And I have been with ODSP since I think it was 97. None of this is new to me. You also avoid them like leppers. Never communicate with them unless it is dire. They simply are not good to deal with.

And they never volunteer any useful information as well. If you don't know what you need, they likely won't tell you. They only reply positively to people that clearly already know the answers to their questions.

Interesting, I've never heard of someone going straight on it. But are there not asset and income thresholds. That would mean you had very little income I would venture and no assets to speak of. Hopefully you can hold out as it sounds like a long venture.

There are assets and income thresholds, yes. Again, I am not applying for ODSP. I am going through the process, however.

Ok now that I'm done swimming in mud hand me a towel. So you are helping someone navigate the process. I'm sure you will have lots of insight soon into the ODSP rabbit hole.

My experience has, so far, been quite positive. I also know exactly what has to be said to qualify. The medical professionals are taking care of that. I was told there are some key phrases which are required (I don't know what they are). If they are included, rejection is less likely.

That's correct. And yes, it's a rabbit hole. But I knew that going in.

Yes there likely are some key phrases. It seems it is always about pushing the right button.

Can you work at all? Nope, not one iota. Repeat repeat repeat.

What will happen if you don't get ODSP? I will starve to death on the street. Say it like you mean it every time they ask the question.

ODSP is saturated in bureaucrats. Most are just number crunching pencil pushers and they really couldn't care about the client. It's just a job, it's not coming out of their pocket. They merely need to be convinced you are serious and the answers are not changing.

I am supposed to be 'reviewed' annually I think. The first couple of years it seemed that way. I can't even think of how many years it has been since any paper pusher noticed I was still breathing. Every time I actually DO need to talk to my case worker I find they are now someone new. Heck I can ever say I have outlived one. My previous case worker went and died on me. And I had neeeeever even met him while I was on his list.
