ProtusMoseImmortal. Eternal.Premium join:2001-10-03 Bellevue, NE kudos:4 | [motherboard] Laptop with no display I've got a Dell Inspiron laptop that's 3 years old. It runs great, except the backlight on the screen is dead. I've replaced both the screen and the power inverter replaced, and the current screen/inverter put in other laptops. Good parts, just won't work with this dell. Something won't power the screen.
Right now I've got it hooked up to an external monitor, but it's still somewhat of a PITA, especially since it dual-boots and the external monitor doesn't display anything until Windows is loading, and navigating the prompts while holding the laptop at various angles trying to make out what's on the screen is difficult.
Is there anything short of an entire new motherboard I can try to fix it? Or, barring that, is there anything I can do to force it to ignore the LCD and output everything to the external port? -- Blogsaus "Everyone bows to something. Everyone answers to someone. | I'm confused. You state the backlight is dead and that by "while holding the laptop at various angles" you can see what is on the screen...which is also an indication that the backlight is faulty. However, your stated fix was to replace the screen and the power inverter...what about replacing the faulty back light? Replacing the LCD screen won't solve the problem if the backlight is bad...nor will replacing the inverter.
As you are getting video to the screen and to the external monitor port, the motherboard (ie: video chipset) are working fine. You simply need a backlight to be able to see what is being displayed.
If I misread or missed something obvious, I apologize. -- Google is your Friend |

| reply to ProtusMose Dogg, the backlight is usually integrated into the LCD so replacing the LCD should solve the problem.
ProtusMose - sounds like the inverter isn't getting any power - double check the inverter cabling for damage or disconnection- specifically, the cabling from the motherboard to the inverter providing the DC voltage. If you've got a multimeter and comfortable using it, you can verify that there's power - likely to be 5V - 24V. NOTE: Be CAREFUL with the other side of the inverter (where the backlight connects - usually Pink and White wiring) as a properly functioning one usually generates High AC (700V +). |

ProtusMoseImmortal. Eternal.Premium join:2001-10-03 Bellevue, NE kudos:4 | reply to Dogg I don't really know much at all about laptop hardware. If the big box on the floor breaks, I can fix it. If it's crammed in the laptop, I let someone more qualified deal with it. I took it to a local shop. That was both of their intended fixes, neither of which worked. Luckily, they didn't charge me a penny.
I figured the backlighting was a component of the screen. I don't know if he replaced the entire screen or just the backlight. I don't even know if this is CFL or LED backlit. I'll have to take it apart tomorrow and see. -- Blogsaus "Everyone bows to something. Everyone answers to someone. Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be also.
