Re: [Official] Tera Online Thread Definitely Rift-level visuals, a combat system that's a mixture of Dragon Age 2, The Witcher 2, and some manual targeting, and MMO mechanics (jury's out on how good they are, still low-level).
I get about 60-75 FPS with a GTX 580 and everything maxed.

Shatter join:2006-07-24 Waterford, MI | reply to I AM Pretty, but I'll be skipping it. For starters the characters have that touch of "gay", Aion was bad enough and I played that for 1.5 years but this one takes it to the next level. The female characters are pretty ridiculous. Second, the game is mostly your typical kill and quest, but Im sure it being a Korean game there is grind in there somewhere. The game doesnt get good until after 20 from a combat standpoint, so thats 20 levels of meh. THe final point is there wont be any world type PvP in this game at launch or anytime soon after, so if you want PvP this isnt the game to play. |

The movement speed in-combat just feels too slow compared to your movement speed outside of combat. Also, the quests are annoying in that they do not show a general area where creatures might be (looked for about 10 minutes for a named monster and never did find the guy) or even give you a general direction in the text in the logbook. -- From Psychonauts - Lungfish Civilian: (describing Goggalor) He's impervious to bullets! ... and love! -- |

| reply to I AM 1st Closed Beta Review Before I got into this review Ill just give a brief history of my MMO experience. I played WoW about 2 months after release until this present day. I played more hardcore during Vanilla and on and off after BC because I got married. Other MMOs that I got into were LOTRO, AOC and also Aion. I wont go into too much details but those are other MMOs I have played in depth and will use them as a reference. I dont consider myself an Elitist or Hardcore gamer. I enjoy games and play them the best I can. Im just breaking down this review as whatever comes up to my mind so there probably will not be a whole lot of organization.
Gameplay: 10/10 Ill be honest the first 5-10 minutes I thought to myself, Wow this game sucks. But after getting use to the movement, combat, and new skills (very important) I have to say this game succeeded were AoC failed. Ill try briefly explain how combat works. You get a starter move somewhat like an auto-attack that you must click. This move attacks and also adds mana to your pool. The mana system for the classes I played (Warrior, Slayer, Beserker) works almost like the rage system in WoW. Attack to build up mana and then you can hot key a new skill that must be directed at the target. Pretty fun actually. For movement classes you can roll to dodge attacks but it has a cd; and for tanking classes you have a blocking skill that you must use to block, both skills take mana. Later on as you start chaining attacks you have an opening move that triggers other skills which you can use spacebar to activate. This helps a lot when you are doing a lot of movement. This is the best combat system Ive played in an MMO.
World: 8/10 It is an Open World game and not instanced. I compare the world to Aions world. You can run zone to zone but there are also channels. Which is nice I was camping a boss for quest with a group that was being waited by other groups as well. We changed channels and there he was killed and left. It has a channel system like Aion and Guild Wars.
AI: 9/10 There is an AI jump from level 19 mobs to level 20 mobs. Lower level mobs do simple attacks and are just plainly dumb as you run around them smacking them. I was quite in shock when I was level 21 and decided this game is too easy Ill jump a zone ahead and go kill some level 22 Orcans. The movement of the Mobs changed and they had additional skills (knockdowns etc).
Questing: 7.5/10 Nothing innovative. Kill 10 fairies gather 5 corpses kind of stuff. What I did find nice is that the questing system reminded me of LOTRO a little. There is a main story quest line and than there are Zone quests. So there is an overall quest line that takes you from node to node, zone to zone, but those places have quests tied to those areas. The Story quest line usually has a nice shiny reward at the end as zone quests are mainly just to help with exp. It also had a nice feature like Aion where you can click on name of Mobs or Named Mobs and it would highlight on your map where you could find those mobs. For all the fears of this game being very Korean grindy it was not at all for this Beta. Level cap was set to 22 and limited to two characters. I hit cap on my warrior and level 17 on my Beserker all in a weekend. If I didnt pvp on my warrior I would have hit cap on my Beserker as well.
PVP: 10/10 Battleground were not available for this Beta Phase but I did get into some 10 on 10 death matches. Pretty much how it worked was a giant duel. You create party and fight another party until everyone is dead. My first toon was a warrior (a dodge tank) and I thought to myself meh I can dps enough to own in PvP. Boy did I get my butt handed too me. My group had two warriors and we couldnt dps enough through heals and got owned pretty bad. Class roles matter a lot, no hybrids trying to DPS in here. I felt like when I first pvp back on Vanilla WoW. I didnt know what I was doing. Movement really matters for the first time in an MMO; though movement is really crucial in WoW, I wont argue that. Well have too see how Battlegrounds are.
Dungeons/Grouping: N/A I didnt get a chance to run the level 20 dungeon. After getting my butt handed to me in PvP I rerolled and didnt get a chance too. But everyone in my guild was really impressed.
UI/Chatting: 7/10 Nothing innovative either. The UI and Chatting system to me is a hybrid of something you would find in Aion and Guild Wars. Im so use to WoWs chatting system that whenever I play a different MMO I can never get comfortable with it. Bars are easy to move through options and keybinding is very easy.
Talent System: 7/10 Now I could be wrong on this. I didnt read much about the game going in and was pretty much doing everything blindly. This is from my point of view how the talent system works. Every class is awarded the same skills. Where they differ is what you glyph certain skills to do. Such as on my warrior I could glyph one of my skills so that my roll skill had a shorter CD. I could also glyph so my other skill generated more threat so I can hold agro to tank. You are limited to glyph points so you cant glyph everything and thus creating your spec. But like I said I could be wrong.
Community: 5/10 I dont know if it was the IGN premium trolls or what but the community reminded me of Aion early on. A bunch of trolls comparing it to WoW or any other existing MMO. I will say though for every idiot I met I also met a nice person. A lot of people in the beta were impressed and the trolls were not were the level 4s who were just complaining. Anyone who got to level 20+ enjoyed the game a lot.
Music: 5/10 Music is meh. Voice overs were corny. They were like an Asian dubbed movie where the lips and voices didnt sync. I dont play to listen to the music of games much as I usually have a Sports Podcast on.
Visual: 9/10 Even without the HD texture in this Beta the game looks great. Art style is a personal preference but for me I thought the game was very beautiful. From the landscapes, armor, weapons and mobs everything looked great, if of course you like the art direction of this game.
Performance: 5/10 The game runs on the Unreal game engine. I know its Beta but the game ran like crap on my PC (Amd FX-6100, 2xHD 6850). I run BF3 on Ultra Settings with no hiccups. It could be that it is not supporting SLI/Crossfire in Beta. I was dropping to like 10 fps in the big city. Serious?
Expectations Overall: 9/10 I followed the game on and off for about a Year. I lost hope in it as it took so long to come over but I have to say I am IMPRESSED. En Masse did a great job Westernizing the game, it does not feel like a Korean MMO grind at all. Combat is awesome. Some MMO reviewers are saying bad things about this game but until you hit level 20 I do not believe you have an understanding of how the game is to be played or what the developers are pushing for. I think this game is a sleeper lost in the shuffle of SWTOR and GW2. It could do surprisingly well. The combat is certainly innovative it all depends now on the battlegrounds and dungeons later on.
I will try to get a video walkthrough later on this week. I have to do some editing. I work fulltime, wife fulltime with Vday tomorrow, school part time so give me a minute haha. |
