Will a Eff. Netw. 5260 modem work on a ADSL2+ network?

Hello all!

I'll soon be connected to an ADSL2+ network (max 5-6 Mb/s service). A friend of mine gave me his old working 5260 modem.

The ISP couldn't confirm me if the modem would work or not on the network... if it doesn't, I'll have the option to buy or rent a newer modem...

Do you think it is even worth the try or I should order a new modem right away?

Many many thanks!

Paul

No ADSL2 or ADSL2+ support, but it will connect at up to 8Mbps on original ADSL protocols [The standard forms of ADSL (ITU G.992.1, G.992.2, and ANSI T1.413-Issue 2) are all built upon the same technical foundation, Discrete Multi Tone (DMT)].

Will it work with your ISP? It is a 50/50 chance if their DSLAM is setup to be backwards compatible with original G.DMT and ANSI T1.413 specs.

Many thanks Dr. Olds! I'll take my chances and try the modem then!

I'll keep the forum updated on whether it works or not once the connection is installed.

Until then, I found some new info: I was told that compatible modems should have the following specs:

Modulation: G.dmt
Protocole: RFC1483 or RFC2516 (PPPoE)
Chipset: Alcatel compatible
DSLAM: Alcatel

Forgive my ignorance, but is this good news for the 5260 on that network?

Many thanks sgain, PaulDRT

The 5260 is G.DMT and Alcatel compatible.
The issue is whether the DSLAM will down-link on older standards.

All right, many thanks again Dr. Olds, I'll cross my fingers!

I'll keep the forum updated when the connection is made (normally tomorrow).

Glad to hear that! Congratulations.

How are your speeds?

Try »www.speedtest.net and the speed tests here »/speed ··· ?flash=1

Here is an example result from my Earthlink ADSL.

I speedtested the modem for a couple of days now and I would say an average of 5Mb/s + a ping of 25ms + an u/l rate of 0.60Mb/s. This seems to go in accordance with the speed I chose with the ISP(5Mb/s).

A Ppoe connection is required with the provider, but I was able to configure my D-Link WBR-1310 Wi-Fi router and it works well.

Many thanks again and have a great week! PaulDRT
