Just Got Service

So I just got Time Warner internet about an hour ago in the Cleveland, Ohio Area with the 30/5 connection.

The tech was friendly and did a nice job. My Download Speed seems to be right on if not a tad higher 30.56Mbps. Which is nice, however, my upload is only running between 1.7 - 3Mbps. In all honesty I would rather loose a little of the download to gain the upload. Will this fix it's self or anything I can do to help the upload speed? I was more excited about getting 5Mbps upload then I actually was the download...

I am running the tests over a Cat5 cable on my New Macbook Pro. Wireless is shutoff.

Do you have a router with a QoS setting that might be limiting upload?

No, I am connected directly to the Motorola SBG6580 Modem...

To be honest, the upload appears to be a little flaky. When running speed tests. The download starts right away and finishes quickly. When the upload starts, sometimes it will take up to 5 seconds before it starts uploading or sometimes the speed test locks up at the upload portion...

Can you post the signal levels from the modem? That will help to know if there is something is wrong with the incoming signal.

OK... your downstream signals are great and your upstream signals are great too. So that's not the problem.

So... lets check one thing. When you're in the cable modem config page, click at the top "Firewall" then click on "Web Filter" on the right side. Make sure that "IP Flood Detection" is unchecked. If it's checked, uncheck it and apply the setting.

TDMA (16QAM) upstream will only give you around 3Mbps max, and ATDMA (64QAM) will give you 5Mbps. So that clearly is why your not getting your full upload, but I have no way of knowing how to fix it. EDIT: try rebooting your modem, maybe it will lock onto a ATDMA upstream channel?

Would submitting a support ticket help?

actually you can get 10.24 (9) Mbps on a TDMA upstream and 15Mbps on a TDMA-ADTMA QAM16/QAM64 upstream that TWC is doing in a lot of areas with wideband.

So that's not the problem then?

I thought the upstream didn't look right. I don't know much about that motorola modem so I never said anything about it but I knew it sounded like it wasn't locked on to something proper.

Have you tried power cycling the modem to see if that will fix it?

I'm not real sure on what you can do to try and fix it. I know personally here in my area theres been a number of issues with the upstream. We dont have D3 here yet though. I wouldn't bother trying to explain anything to tier 1 they don't have much that can help people out like yourself. You would need to talk to tier 3 in your case and explain to them the problem with the upstream channel being the wrong type which in turn isn't giving you your full upload.

Maybe it would be best to just send a message to the direct support on this site?

I know AT&T has been real good with direct support. Never tried Time Warners.

that upstream right alright the SBG6580 just doesn't use the "QAM" name on the upstream instead it uses Time Division Mutiple Access (TMDA) and advanced (TDMA) as the substitute for QAM16 (TDMA) and QAM 64 (ATDMA) both names are part of the standard it is just the way motorola does things.
