UVerse

I currently have ATT DSL and have been thinking of switching to UVerse.

I was wondering a couple of things though. First if i want a router/gateway what kind do they provide and do they allow port forwarding? Also I'd like a router/gateway that allows the wireless option to be disabled.

Been having tons of issues with the DSL service the last year. Been with DSL for 10 yrs now since it was Bellsouth and just looking into options.

Motorola and 2wire
All allow port forwarding and the wireless can be disabled

Att uses the same ip address 192.168.1.254 for it's modems, but there are exceptions

One other question along with DSL from ATT i also have a landlind phone service (non uverse) from ATT. Now if i switch to Uverse internet will I also have to switch my home phone service to Uverse also? I prefer having a landline where u dont need power i dont like the idea of having my home phone service hooked in thru the Uverse gateway and if power goes out for long periods of time....esp in hurricane prone area like i live in......i dont want to be without home phone service

Since you have so many questions about the U-verse service, you might be better off having a mod move your thread to the »AT&T U-verse forum, where folks who already have U-verse service can give you first hand answers.

I seem to recall seeing installation stories that indicated that AT&T does not really have a firm company wide policy on keeping POTS with U-Verse. I think that it is pretty much subject to the whims of the local management (and/or the phase of the moon).

No need to apologize, but you probably will get more timely and accurate information for U-verse questions from the »AT&T U-verse forum.

No, the voice service can remain as it is now

This information is dated and I could not find any updates, so it may no longer be meaningful. Worth a read anyway.

I just had UVerse become available to me this past week. Is there really any reason to switch over though? I'm getting the plain 3Mbps & unlimited calling and I would probably get the same on UVerse if I were to switch.

If your happy with what you have and don't feel a need to upgrade speed then don't switch. In your case there would be no need to, until they eventually force you to upgrade your internet. I would strongly recommend sticking with POTS even if you do switch your internet to Uverse though.
Lastly, getting Uverse is quite the chore, and getting the billing right can be almost hopeless, it makes traditional DSL and POTS look heavenly compared to how Uverse handles things.

Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll stick with what I have then.
