 | [General] VoIP business phone line service in the GTA I'm looking at dropping my (Toronto-area) Bell business land line, which is costing close to $100/month. I'm switching my Internet service to TekSavvy (after 20 unhappy years as a Robbers customer!), who offer phone service. However TSI don't mention anything about business phone services on their website. I want to transfer my business number, either to a VoIP service plan or some other home phone service. My only requirements are that:
1. I can keep my current phone number. 2. The Caller Name Display for incoming/outgoing calls lists my business name.
The barrier I'm facing is with Bell not allowing me to have a residential phone line registered to a company name. I want a business line, just not at the prices they're offering. What are my options? Any help would be greatly appreciated |

| 1) Look at Voip.MS (for business use, it's PAYG inbound and PAYG outbound, but a good value especially for Canadian calls). You can ask them if they can support outbound caller ID name (CNAM) for your phone number.
2) Or Acrovoice business service. »www.acrovoice.ca/content/business_service |

If you want something that looks and feels like your Bell line, except one heckofalot cheaper, I'm your guy. I can make sure your business remains in the phone book, too, if that's important for you.
If you want something you can tinker with and optimize to your exact needs, PX makes a great recommendation as well. -- Wondering what I do? Find out at »www.digitalcon.ca |

I had thought there was some variation there....especially in the non-Bell and/or Western areas.... |

| reply to Fuzzy Dunlop said by Fuzzy Dunlop:I'm looking at dropping my (Toronto-area) Bell business land line.... Keep in mind that you can have multiple providers, and/or use different inbound and outbound providers.
For [inbound] service for your business, if you receive a lot of inbound calls, you may want to consider:
CallCentric Office Unlimited phone number (Inbound---DID service): »www.callcentric.com/dids/office_unlimited
$ 8.95 a month (plus 1.50 for 911) gets 3 channels with unlimited inbound minutes.
If you are a heavy inbound user, this can be a good option. |

| reply to PX Eliezer It's complicated because we use two systems for CNAM here.
Telus (western ILEC) for example doesn't deliver CNAM with outgoing calls; you need to do a database lookup. But they WILL display CNAM for inbound calls from VoIP.ms users that use the premium route.
I am not aware of a Canadian provider that can't display CNAM sent in this fashion, but I'm sure Trev will correct me if I'm wrong! |

| Ah, it was actually your post from 2010 that was stuck in my brain!
That's because Canada has two Caller ID systems. In British Columbia, about half the carriers use one and half the carriers use the other. Ostensibly, the same is true in Ontario.
With some carriers, the name is passed as SS7/IAM data. I prefer this method because there's no cost, and when the caller wants to change the Caller ID name, there's no waiting for the new name to appear.
With other carriers, the name isn't passed, and the receiving carrier must perform a lookup in a database. This is what costs $0.0125 at VoIP.ms; some other carriers bundle it into the price of the DID. »Re: Voip.ms Caller ID Question |

However, don't count rely on that!

I'm not aware of any Canadian telcos that will not pass along a name that is provided. However, some US service providers don't pass it along (that is, US service providers that provide Canadian DIDs). I think this is more to do with them not expecting it and thus never bothered to make sure the data is maintained.
These providers will rely on 3rd party CNAM dips which is where a phone book listing comes in handy, as that listing will get your number into those 3rd party CNAM databases. -- Wondering what I do? Find out at »www.digitalcon.ca |

 | reply to Fuzzy Dunlop I'm in a similar situation - I want a service that is cheaper than Bell for my business line, need to keep my current phone number, but don't need the caller name display feature.
Did you find a solution? If so, can you please share it. |
