Mercedes C300

Does anyone own a C300 (year 2008-2010)? Wife and I were looking to purchase a new (used) car and the local Carmax has 11 of these on the lot. Price ranging from $22k - $29k, base models to sport models. I've always been a VW/Audi guy but this Mercedes model has made my head turn a few times. Looking for any input; good, bad or indifferent.

thanks,

Late model Mercedes have had reliability issues from what I remember, and the only recommended one by Consumer Reports was one of the E classes. They're nice cars, but they are expensive to maintain.

I know a girl with 2009 C300, and isn't that car a hell. I am also VW/Audi guy and driving one made me want to crash into first tree. It looks ok, but interior leave lot to be desired. And maintenance wise, also too expensive.

I agree, I test drove a few of those (same scenario dealer had ten or so 1-3 year old C class cars) a few months ago.

A few observations:
•Some what numb.... everything. After testing other brands in this class, these felt numb in steering, stopping, and throttle. Compared to BMW and Infinity (granted, they lean more to the sport side of life) the Mercs felt... disconnected and driving by wire.

•Fit and Finish - Great on the outside, not as much on the inside. Truth be told, these were used cars and they were likely loaners/leasers but the 2 or 3 I really looked at just didn't feel like they were solid on the inside for the money. Also, and this is just a personal note, who the heck wants a car with a dial pad in it in 2012?

•Engine - Once again I was looking more for a sports sedan/coupe when shopping, but the other cars in the class had more torque and horsepower for the money, and really felt like it. Even the 350 felt lacking. This may have been a product of the numbness I talked about above, as I have driven slower cars that felt faster and more responsive.

•Looks - Man these look great... no matter what. I think by far they are the prettiest looking in the class and depending on the color, some of the best on the road.

•Price - Maintenance will be expensive, but I still think these cars (if priced like mine locally) are a good value for money. That said, a late model BMW will have the balance of the 4 year no cost maintenance program or the extended 6 year warranty.

Shop around with other brands, if you love it get it. Life is to short not to have some fun when you drive

These are very good points.
One things that REALLY bothers me is cruise control stalk, I keep on hitting it instead of turn signals. very frustrating. Radio seems ancient too. Too many buttons, not as much functionality. As you said WTF is with dialpad?
And you have have 500 hp but transmission is simply a delayed slushbox.
I would look at BMW/Audi

Having test drove both an Infiniti G25x and G37x recently, I would say that if your looking for that kind of class of car, those would be the one's that should be at the top of your list.

I already bought and drive a 335i xdrive coupe

The Infiniti was a fun test drive though.

Ah, well I was referring to the OP really.

It was, but it was pricier than I cared for.

Thanks for the info. I'm hearing/reading the same issues (on other sites) with the C300 as I'm seeing here.
Infinity is not on my list because 3 of my friends drive them. Great cars but I like to be different.
We're currently (now) looking at the BMW 328 & 335, Audi S4 & A6 S-Line.

Cousin has an Audi S6 and loves it. I don't care for Audi personally because of their poor repair track record.

Go with the 335 if you want to differentiate yourself, everyone and their brother has a 328i.

My 2006 S4 has been the best car I ever owned, as well as the most fun.

If you don't have to have AWD, there's always the Hyundai Genesis sedan. 370+ horsepower, 6spd auto (made by ZF), 26 mpg highway, tuned somewhere between BMW and Mercedes in sportiness. There's more interior room than a BMW 7 series, a killer stereo, and tons of options you'd never expect on a "lowly" Hyundai.

Yes, it has zero snob appeal, that's true. You should see the trail of Mercedes and BMW drivers that chase them to ask what kind of car it is though. It happened to me the first time I drove one. They almost accuse you of lying when you say Hyundai!

I "get" the car market too. My last car was a 400+ whp Legacy GT so I've had the powerful comfy sedan. I've got extensive seat time in various Lexus models yet I like the Genesis (particularly the new 429hp 5.0 liter model) My brother has a $190k CL65 yet he's looking at the Equus for long trips. Hyundai is worth a look these days.

Drive one. You might just like it. The test drive is free!

+1

I hadn't even thought about the Genesis, but they are nice cars.

My uncle's Genesis, in Cabernet red pearl. Tell me that's not a head turner!
