[Rant] Non hot-pluggable laptop dock? Seriously?!?!?

The instructions for this thing specifically say that the laptop must be SHUT DOWN completely prior to docking or undocking the laptop!

This completely defeats the purpose of having a docking station in the first place! I can plug/unplug all the USB/LAN/VGA cables faster than the time it takes to shut down or start up the computer.

Who is the moron that designed this thing?

Or rather, the designers are probably NOT morons, but the bosses who insisted on it working that way for cost savings, ARE. But then again, for what slave labor makes overseas in China...

Design decisions aside, you have the right to expect the thing to work in the manner you describe. I'd let them know how you feel, by letter. Tell them you realize it isn't the design teams fault but bad management and that you expect better for your money.

Wow seriously lame. I take my Dell on and off of the dock at least once a day and I don't normally shut it down ever just use sleep.

At first I didn't think I'd need the dock but un/plugging 4 cables every time got old real fast, and a dock found its way into my next order. I also like the tilt it puts on the keyboard and that it should save wear and tear on the other ports, especially power.

all of that said, hot-pluggable electronics are fairly difficult to design. the possible of short circuits poses a major risk to the integrity of electronics. do we trust Chinese engineers and laborers to be that careful?

Well maybe I wouldn't trust the Chinese engineers to design it, but Panasonic is probably doing most of their design in Japan

Looks like the Dell Latitude computers and docks are all made in China and they have been pretty reliable around here.

The mechanism seems pretty robust. Two posts have to be lined up before you can begin to push the laptop down onto the connector then it secures with a hefty click.

We do have a few Dell Latitude here too, and I agree, the docking stations are pretty reliable.

Actually, if some company can design electronics and laptops, I don't understand why they can't design a hot-swappable docking station...

Best scientist I ever worked with was Chinese, but from Taiwan. She was a super nice person. Chinese engineers are capable, after all, they are just people like everybody else, and much of what you buy today is designed there already. Though, still, if I have a choice, I prefer US, then Japanese, then German, designs...

We need to not hate the Chinese worker, they are virtual slaves most of them.

Yeah, the fact that stuff comes from China is not a problem.

Look at Monoprice... most of their stuff come from China. Still, most of the stuff I ordered from them were cheaper and better or same quality as the expensive stuff found in local stores.

The problem is that some company under-pay the workers and want to save even more by using bad quality materials.

WHAT????

google this "(sqrt(cos(x))*cos(200*x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(9-x^2), -sqrt(9-x^2)"

How difficult could it be?

All of the interfaces found on the dock itself are hot-pluggable (USB, VGA, ethernet, DP).

So how difficult can it be to make the laptopdock interface also hot-pluggable? Especially considering the fact that many other manufacturers, Dell for example, have been producing hot-pluggable docks for years.

actually VGA, parallel and COM ports are not "technically" hot pluggable. all computer monitor manuals tell you to turn the machine off before plugging in the connector.
