A group led by an Austrian law student said today [pdf] that progress has been made in finding out exactly what type of information Facebook stores about its users, but concerns remain.
Schrems made headlines last year when he asked Facebook to turn over the data it had stored about his Facebook activity and was shocked to find just how much information that included. He then founded Europe-v-Facebook.org and filed his DPC complaints, which included one that accused Facebook of creating "shadow profiles" with the data imported from various outside services, like mobile phones, email contact lists, instant messaging services, invites to friends not on Facebook, and more.
"We still have serious doubts about a lot of Facebook's data usage and will go on pushing the company to fully implement European data protection law," he concluded. |

| reply to FF4me User data, its manipulation and sale in whatever form, and placement of targeted ads based on the results are Facebook's very life-blood... they have no other meaningful incoming cash flow. Do users (or the various regulatory bodies) honestly believe Facebook won't do everything humanly possible to enhance and preserve that cash flow? Data about users is the crop being harvested, and it only makes sense that Facebook will do everything they can to redefine terminology, play semantic games, constantly shift "policies" and methods, reinvent EULAs, and a host of other strategies to keep that data preserved and that cash stream alive and healthy. | reply to FF4me Yeah, and because it's social, even not having an account doesn't make you immune. Most of my friends, sis and mom all have accounts and I can't really stop them all from sharing things.
For example, last year we had family pictures taken. Of course, my sis posted them on her FB practically immediately as they were digital files and her friend was the photographer. They were on FB before I even got to see them myself.
Privacy doesn't really exist online IMO. --
