2 edits | TekSavvy Express Cable 12 : Ottawa ? I'm gearing-up to get the Teksavvy Cable 12. Anyone got the teksavvy Cable 12 , or higher, in Ottawa ? I'm in Vanier area. I'm just wondering how your speeds, stability, advice, ... are. ?
I've been with DSL(6-Meg from another provider) for 4 years now, however, in a looong discussion with teksavvy Sales, the $12 I save by going to Cable 12 (will now help get my VOIP too). I'm aware that (historically) Cable can "suck" when it comes to congested areas,..., let alone the fact that Ottawa itself, is not highly-rated when it comes to Internet speed/quality.
One thing I do NOT like, is that : Cable-12's up = 512kb ? DSL-12's up = 1Mb
TY again, I appreciate any feedback |

 | I'm on the St-Laurent POI. It's reliable enough, but some congestion in the evenings.

Misaow join:2010-10-19 Ottawa, ON | reply to rik5 I'm on the 15/1... or i guess 24/1 now next to Hurdman. Speeds are good, especially on Steam/Netflix/Hulu, torrents a little less, but that might be the lack of available connections.
Steam i averaged 2.3Mbps on downloads during the summer, now i get avg 3.4Mbps over extended periods of time.... i get this speed during the evening, while streaming netflix/hulu and someone else playing online... idk how that one works...
Torrents i average 1.2-1.5Mbps while i manually cap my upload to 80Kbps (to not saturate my download) and it stays at 80Kbps pretty much 100% of the time.
I have had a few issues with my internet not working on a few occasions, once when Rogers decided to shut off my internet 43 days after i cancelled with them and was already on Teksavvy, and a second time they had to redo all the cables. (Thank you unlimited data phone )
If you are going to get the cable, you should go to Canada Computers and pick up the installation kit there. You get a free month of service with the modem. |

rik5 join:2008-05-25 Vanier, ON 1 edit | Thanks very much, for that info. But yep, compared to DSL, Cable can be a "game"-killer online sometimes. |
|
Misaow join:2010-10-19 Ottawa, ON | I switches to Teksavvy initially because i could no longer play WoW on my Robbers line as i was being throttled to sub 25kbps during prime time (6pm-2am) because WoW uses p2p for updates, etc.
On Teksavvy my latency was about 25% higher (but we are talking 60ms to 75ms... so nothing really) but no more speed dropping, and torrents started to work again.
Funny thing is now i don't even play WoW...
As for other games i have played, from what i can tell, only on 1 occasion has the lag cause by my connection been detrimental to my enjoyment of the game. There is always latency issues and such with games, but most of the time, the issue is not with your connection and more with the servers you are connecting to. |

4 edits | On my DSL-line (6Mbp/800kbs) I have never had problems playing Guild Wars, (except, as you mentioned, due to GW's servers ..., sometimes), and I ran a Mumble server (game-talk). - And mumble req'd at the least, a "good"-steady 32k/up-compressed for good voice quality.
I had played a lot of GW. Guild Wars, or WoW, they are both similar BW requirements, I assume ? Either way, I'm goona get the "DOCSIS 3.0" if I go cable - I've heard good things about it.
mmm, I hope this teksavvy Cable 12 Line (12M/512kbps) will be enough ? |

 | reply to rik5 No issues on Richmond Road POI. I have some minor node level congestion that can probably be improved if I had upgraded to a D3 modem.
In my case my DSL line sucks, so it has to be on interleave profile. Going to cable internet means my 40+ ms latency is down to 15ms. |
|
rik5 join:2008-05-25 Vanier, ON | ya, I heard the D3, as you mentioned, is supposed to help a bit... thx. |

| reply to rik5 Well, thanks all for the reps'. Being that I haven't tried "Cable" in like 5 years, I'm gonna try it again. I wish I wasn't such a tech-fiddler/couch-Technician But hey, maybe Rogers has actually upgraded my area, finally ???!!! I'll find out soon enough, with teksavvy. -Lol.

 | reply to rik5 You should look into the D3 modem if/when Rogers rolls out their 12/512 to 18/512 D3 modem only upgrade for TPIA.
I am going to buy one when that happens. |

| Move to Kanata ?, where my house would be worth 1/2 of what anyone in Kanata paid for it -way back then? uhhh - NO THANKS !.
But I'm glad that Rogers/Bell/MLS.CA are trying to upgrade everything out there, just to make it more enticeing, once again. ? GL. |

 | Well, we're the most expensive suburb for a reason and I'll gladly reap the benefits of TSI's best POI in the city |

rik555 join:2012-02-16 Vanier, ON | reply to rik5 ya so I just tried my teksavvy Cable between 5PM and 8PM last nite, and I'm too embarrased to post the results. I could barely move. It was soooo SLOW, that my "upstream" was much faster than my download. wtf ? oh ya, but at 4AM (my Taksavvy-Cable)was as "fast" as what I "paid" for. geeez, thx.
Bottom-line, IS (a comparable) Teksavvy DSL better than this crap-cable?

| Hi,
I was thinking of doing just like you next month, going from DSL 6/0.8 to Cable 24/1. I would be moving just across the river, close enough from Vanier and on the St Laurent POI.
Are the speeds really really bad? I don't care if I get 15 or even 7 on download in the evening as long as the upstream is steady and the ping is ok.
Any feedback that you could give us?
I may decide to go with DSL 12/1 after all.
Thanks. |
