Free medical help

I have a friend who returned to Huntington Beach a few months ago. She's been very sick the past few days and is in need of medical treatment. She has no income or money because she was recently laid off. The former employers last check bounced. When she has called the free clinics listed on the web they say they really are not free and want at least $45 just to see her. If she had the $45 she'd go to a doctor.

Does anyone know of a truly free clinic in her area? A friend can drive her a reasonable distance.

Thanks.

For L.A. County it's:

For more information about Healthy Way L.A. (HWLA), a No-Cost health coverage program for uninsured L.A. County residents between the ages of 19 and 64, call toll-free 1-877-333-4952 or visit the website at www.ladhs.org/hwla

In Orange County try:

MSI is a Federal, State and County funded healthcare program that provides medical care for Orange County's low-income citizens. It provides a full range of medical services for County residents 21 through 64 years of age. All program participants are assigned to a "medical home" that coordinates all aspects of their care and assures the appropriate referral to other providers as needed. The MSI program contracts with all of the County's key clinics and hospitals and provides integrated care through contractual relationships with surgery centers, skilled nursing facilities, urgent care facilities, "minute clinics" and a variety of diagnostic centers and programs. Financial eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis however, only persons with annual incomes below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible. In applying for the program, proof of Orange County residency and U.S. citizenship or legal residency is required.

The LA one has the following eligibility requirements:
•Residency: Los Angeles County
•Age: Adult, 19 to 64 years of age
•Citizenship: U.S. Citizen/National or Legal Permanent Resident of 5 + years
•Income: Monthly income limit ($1,207 or less for a family of one)
•Pregnancy: Not pregnant or eligible for Medi-Cal or Healthy Families

The $1207 income limit pretty much excludes almost everyone who could use it who's actually working.

$1207 / 30 days = $40/day
$40 / 8 hours per day [full time] = $5.00/hr
$40 / 4 hours per day [part time] = $10.00/hr

I've heard UCI Medical Center will not turn anyone away for lack of funds.
LA County / USC Medical Center operates in much the same way (just be out of there before dark).
