wtf

I don't know what the standard practice is but... Why does my mailman/woman not take my netflix out going %50 the time? If mail is in there than I guess its yours.
Is there some strange policy about having a flag up? Cause I never put my flag up cause it invites "Hey mailbox" I am never going to put mail outgoing and flag it. It is a freak that we get no mail at all anyway.

If you don't put the flag up then that's why they aren't taking it, that is how they know that it is outgoing mail.

Get a PO Box if the neighborhood is that bad, or if other people are getting their mail stolen, petition for a cluster mailbox.

The purpose of the flag is just that... to signify that you have placed outgoing mail inside.

If you place outgoing mail in your mailbox and do not raise the flag the mailman will assume that what is in there is mail you have not retrieved yet.

The flag up/flag down thing is standard practice and i personally have been aware of this since I was a child.

Is this a stealth mailbox that can't be seen unless the flag is up? I agree with everyone else, flag up means outgoing mail inside, its supposed to say "hey outgoing mail" to the mailman. If your worried about people raiding your box a flag up or down won't make a difference.

If you're that worried about outgoing mail, take it (and the rest of your outgoing mail) to a drop box somewhere. That's about your only solution.

We do not put the flag up on our box because a few years ago we had outgoing mail stolen, but we did talk to our carrier and told him what had happened and he said no problem, he checks our box every day. I would suggest that if you don't see him when he comes leave a note explaining your concern of theft or call the post office and see what they suggest.

You actually talked to someone to solve a problem, and they listened? LOL, imagine that... Talking to someone instead of ranting anonymously on an internet discussion forum. Brilliant!

Might be along those same lines... I had a mail slot in my door for years that they were required to use. I found out unless they had mail to deliver they did not need to walk to the door to see if their was mail to pick up. Some postal rule. I think the same applies in your case... unless they have mail to deliver or your have the flag up indicating that there is mail, they are not required to check.

Though I've never had any mail taken, for the past dozen or more years I only put my outgoing mail in a us mail mailbox or in the post office. I've never had it picked up at my house.

I've never had a mailman pick up my mail from my box, and until a few years ago I didn't even know that was possible.

I prefer to go to the blue drop box on my way to work over leaving it in my mailbox.

I've even had outgoing mail 'clothespin' clipped to outside of my mailbox and it wasn't picked up by the postalperson. The following day I happened to see that person putting mail in my mailbox and I asked him why the outgoing mail wasn't taken the day before...he stated that even if it is showing outgoing, if I don't have any incoming mail, then they won't take the outgoing...postal rule. But he WILL take it from now on anyway...as a favor to me...and has done so for the past 2yrs now.

When I lived in an RD area we had to leave the flag up or the mailman would not stop for a pickup. He flew by and if it was up he would get us on the way back of our no-exit road.

In the city I think the postal workers have enough to carry by delivering the mail and parcels. I always take my outgoing letters to work with me and drop them off at the Post Office or put them in a mailbox. That way I'm sure they'll get to their destination.

2 folks I don't like to PO are the cook at the restaurant and my mailman.

They should have official forms that they carry stating that the flag must be up. Ask em how I know.

Nope, he wasn't lying. I checked with my cousin-in-law...who is 1 of the Postmasters in this city, and he stated what my mailman said was true.

If your mailbox is located on the street, letter carriers should pickup outgoing mail if the flag is up. If your mailbox is attached to the house, letter carriers are not required to pickup mail if they have no mail to deliver. Mail cannot be delivered to or picked up from a blocked mailbox..

That's great for you that your learned something as a child. Now I had never had any trouble with mail going out because of a flag. Not since netflix came have issues started. Been putting mail in the mailbox since I was a child.
That said I guess I will call the post office because the last time I went to talk to the "Mailperson" as they were delivering mail it said, "step back sir. I can't deal with you while I'm delivering mail". So I will cut out the middle man and see what that gets me.
Sometimes I do drop it of at a blue box but it all depends on the times I'm out. If I miss my normal box, or if it is late in the day, different delivery options.
Why would I expect the government employee to read:
