4-year-old playing World of WorldCrap

So we let my four year old play video games for an hour or so each night. He used to play Mario, Transformers or SpongeBob, but as decided to take a break and play “World of WorldCrap” (yes he can’t pronounce it right).

I sit at the computer with him when he plays (I’m glad he can’t log in on his own) and it’s really hard to resist the urge not to take over the controls. He likes to go for boat rides, sleep in fountains, ride the IF to SW tram, kill cows 30 levels lower than him, do the Darkmoon fair cannon shoot and tank games, likes to swim with his mounts, likes to dance on mailboxes, he sits on every chair he can click on and lays in every bed he finds, in LFD’s he often stops helping the group and instead runs around to go jump in puddles not carrying about agro, in WSG he likes to stand near the house and wait for the green health/mana boost to spawn and run around with the spell effect showing, likes to steal the fast boots and run, etc. In other words, he plays like much of the rest of the Alliance.

The point of my post is I’m wondering if any of the rest of you have kids that you let play who are obviously way too young to play, but you let them anyway? I’m sure he is pissing off people in BG’s and LFD’s, does that make me a dick (not that I really care)? Any suggestions on other things in game that would appeal to a four year old?

I would seriously ask that you not let him play in BGs/LFDs. I couldn't possibly care less about what he decides to do with his hour a night when he's killing cows, sleeping on beds and sitting on chairs.

But when that inability to "play the objective" impacts my, or another players, ability to complete the objective in a timely manner... that's not OK.

The kid's four. Let him do whatever the heck he wants to do. I just don't want him in my 5 man or my BG. I'm alliance again, we have enough window lickers, we don't need your kid.

LOL i will from now on think a 4 year old is causing wipes in heroics from this point on. Especially the one who wont return messages in chat. I would say try to limit his game play where the only thing affected is the toon he is on, or a NPC.

I agree with Drew. Yes he is only four, he doesn't really understand the game. He plays how he wants because that's the only way he currently knows how to. And yes he most certainly is pissing people off in LFD/BGs. When his "playing" affects others that's when it's not OK and needs to stop. If he can learn to actually play and stay focused then LFD/BGs might be OK or maybe doing those with your help but until then I don't think he needs to do those. And the excuse of "everyone else is doing it" doesn't fly.

You don't have to stop him from playing wow completely, just don't let him do LFD or BGs unless you are controlling it and he is just watching and helping. If you do want to continue letting him do that, yeah that makes you a dick. If you encourage it and if you don't care as you state, that makes you an even bigger dick. Better hope he isn't on your main or any toon you play regularly. People WILL remember you.

I should have added that his toon is level 34, so he's not ruining max level BG's or LFD's. And in the LFD's he plays, they seem to do just fine despite his failure to focus on objectives.

In the BG's he often gets one shot by BOA rogues which for some reason he thinks is funny.

I get your point though Drew. I guess when he wants to do a BG or dungeon I may give him a little less freedom and try to make him at least not interfere with other players enjoyment.

In that case it's a little different. If you care what others think then no I don't think that makes you a dick.

If I was to explain to my (almost) four year old, I'd put it in concepts she'd understand...

"You know when you play with your cousins, if you don't play right, they don't want to play with you?" and go from there...

On a side note... am I a bad dad for not having taught my daughter anything about using a computer by this age? I mean I see all these threads on forums and reddit and stuff and it's just strange... the kid can (kind of) operate an iPhone/iPad to play/pause/stop a video but other than that...

No keep her away from it as long as possible, IMHO. Its a constant battle for us to limit the game time. If we let him (or my other kids) they would play every waking moment of the day.

limiting game time is good limiting exposure is not, my daughter now 6 plays educational games online and it helps her immensely at school, to be short sighted as to not have them proficient in computers is limiting thier potential for growth in the future, yes being able to do math, and reading comprenhension, via reading actual paper bound books is essential but, computers and the internet will be even more dominate in thier future than it is in our present.

BG's I'm ok with. LFD is different. Half of the people in BG's are not playing correctly anyways. The teamwork neeed in LFD is different however.

My kids started playing WOW when they were 7 or 8. They are now going on 13. They stumbled upon a "friend". Turns out their "friend" claims to be a 13 year old girl. I was in a party with them last night. One of my boys turned it up a notch. He asked the "girl" how she liked his sword. He said "doesn't it look bada$$"

I had to chuckle. I stayed out of the conversation for the most part.

They think she is a real girl, that is 13. Me, I still have my doubts. But as long as no bus tickets are arriving in their e-mail or at the front door, I think we'll be ok.

so i got my hair cut yesterday. this slightly overwieght 14 yo (i guess) came in with his clearly overweight mother. the lady working at Great Clips tried to engage him in a conversation while she was pulling up his record on the computer. he just looked at the floor. his mom said, "hes just mad I pulled him away from his computer."

I tried to liven his spirits abit by asking what game he was playing to no avail. Kid just kept looking down. Mom said he was watching youtube, that he plays games on the xbox. me, "Cool, which ones, I like the CoD:MW series and BF3." Him, "yeah".

I've never known gamers to shy away from other gamers... maybe he really likes his hello kitty island adventure.
