Printed USPS labels with Chrome. Safari,Fire,MBP IE failed

I was able to print with Chrome. Chrome asks for the printer. Safari, Firefox, even Windows running IE in a MBP failed.

Back in early December I got it working with Firefox on Lion.

on Firefox it was downloading a file, not printing. The downloaded file would not open with Preview or Word.

Are all the browsers fully updated along with Flash and Java? I have no issues lately with Snow Leopard and any browser combo printing labels through ebay.

I have had issues with printing from USPS, but I think it worked fine the last couple of times.

One work around is to rename that downloaded file to a .pdf and then print it from Preview.

Yeap, that's what I had to many times.... I got it "fixed" permanently after trial and error though but switched to Chrome not long after, where it works flawlessly.

For Firefox, you HAVE to have Adobe Reader installed. I know, I know... On a Mac, it's redundant ! Inside Firefox, you had to tell it to use Adobe Reader for PDF files. Don't worry, it only applies there, not system-wide.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure I just renamed the downloaded file as a PDF and printed through Preview.

I don't have Adobe Reader installed on this Mac and I'm confident I can print out a USPS label through any of several browsers.

That's not what I said.... Renaming it will still work but MOST people will never figure that out. If it does't pop-up on screen, they're stuck. Having Reader installed should allow the label to open on-screen like expected.

It's been a while since I used FF but maybe the USPS has finally gotten a clue that Macs don't need Adobe Reader.

Wow. That level of ignorance is kinda scary. You're downloading a PDF. The USPS site says you need to be able to open/print pdf files. You get a file. One might expect that it's um... a pdf file.

The problem is, it's a relatively random name that's dumped in your "Downloads" folder and it doesn't have a .pdf file extension. I realize that OS X doesn't need extensions (it is smart enough to read 'inside' the file) but if I recall, I still had to tell it to use Preview (or Adobe Reader).

Isn't the emphasis with Apple or Mac that "it just works" ? Here, through the fault of the USPS, it doesn't !

Sure, but "it just works" should not be a synonym for "my brain doesn't"

USPS incompetence rising to a higher level. It's a shame I can print boarding passes and non-USPS shipping labels, but for some reason our postal service doesn't have a clue.

Come on boys and girls, it was a joke with the "it just works" comment. Whether Apple likes it or not, they can't control everything !

Last time I tried printing a USPS label from Safari, I asked USPS via the "Chat" button. They told me it doesn't yet work with Safari. I then tried Chrome and the label printed perfectly.

You do NOT need Adobe Reader.
