Recycle Bin Corrupt / Windows XP

I have two computers that state "The Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupt or invalid" when the user tries to delete a file.

I have the latest service pack and I've applied the hotfix from here: »support.microsoft.com/kb/297760

This worked temporarily, but the problem came back: »www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_ed···ebin.reg

Emptying the recycle bin makes the problem go away, but then it comes back a few days later.

I've tried rd /s c:\recycler - this time the problem took longer to come back; about 3 weeks.

Someone suggested a virus could be messing with the recycle bin but my scans turned up clean and there are no other symptoms.

I heard about a corrupt info2 file but that doesn't apply to us because we use NTFS, not FAT32.

The two computers in question have completely different hardware, but the same software. Other computers with the same hardware do not have the problem.

We are not using any third-party undelete utility.

If anyone has some advice, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mango

Forgive me for suggesting the obvious, but the HDDs are passing diagnostics, yes?
Safe mode maybe?
SFC /scannow?

Just thinking out loud...
